When we made our way back to the Mob's house, it was already afternoon. It was pretty dark, the clouds were covering the sun and it was still raining a little. After some time, Rakim went inside a shop to get a few things he promised to bring for the guys, I guess he was just talking about snacks or dinner as it was a food store. I waited outside, watching the people walk by me. Suddenly, a guy in a black hoodie passed, but a little note flew out of his pocket. I picked it up and yelled: "Sir, you lost something!" Although he must have heard me, the boy just carried on walking and soon, he had disappeared. Curious as I was, I decided to take a look at the slightly wet piece of paper.
After I had unfolded it, I could read in handwritten letters:
'Meet me at midnight at the Harriet Tubman Memorial'.
That was it, the mysterious guy hadn't added anything more to it. Something told me not to ignore it, a feeling told me to go there. In the corner of my eye, I saw Rakim exiting the store, so I quickly slid the piece of paper into my pocket. "Hey, you got everything?", I smiled. "Yeah, knowing me I probably forgot something but eh", he laughed. His laugh made me feel better immediately, it was just so genuine and positive.
When we were back, the thought of the message just wouldn't let me go. Despite my brain telling me not to go, I decided to meet the anonymous person. I had to.
The time just wouldn't pass. Minute after minute, hour after hour. I had the house all to myself, the mob was out- I don't know where they went, probably selling drugs or at a strip club.
To distract me, I began cleaning up the house- I threw all the garbage out, washed their clothes, and dried them. Seems like a weird thing to do when you're bored, but when you feel lonely it's a very good way to make time pass. I got new sheets for their beds and tried my best to get the stale air out of the boy's rooms. It was already half past 9 when they came back; I wanted to leave at eleven-thirty.
The guys were blown away by the clean rooms, which put a smile on my face. Dom seemed to notice I was a little tense though and asked if I was alright. Forcing a calm expression on my face, I nodded and told him to get some rest as he looked really tired. Ferg and the other boys went into the living room, and I was just about to make some food for them when Rakim pulled me aside.
"Are you okay, Zara? You look a little off", he checked on me concernedly. "Yeah", I nodded. "Yeah, I'm fine. Are you okay?", I asked. He smiled. "I'm good shawty, just a lil exhausted. My stomach could use some snacks, too!", he laughed. "I was just about to prepare something for y'all. You can just lay down, imma bring it to you", I said. "Naaaah you ain't our maid bruh! Come on, imma help you", he said, which intrigued me. I wouldn't have thought he would offer his help, it definitely made him more likable. We prepared dinner together, and the boys, who were watching YouTube on the big TV in the living room, accepted it gladly.
I sat down next to Ferg and we had a short conversation, then I just cuddled into his arms and we stayed like this for a while.
By the time almost everyone was in their rooms chilling, it was quarter to eleven. The only guys left were Ferg and Nast. I prayed for them to leave because to get outside I had to cross the living room- god must have heard my prayers because the room was empty by quarter past eleven, which gave me enough time to get ready.
I had taken a black hoodie and dark grey sweats from Rakim, and put my hair into a ponytail. I put on my shoes, and just when my hand connected with the doorknob, I heard a voice that made me freeze.
"Where do you think you're going?"
I spun around to see Rakim in sweatpants, without a shirt on. I opened my mouth and shut it again. "Rakim, I'll be back soon, I just need you to go back to sleep", I pleaded. "You're not going anywhere as long as you're not telling me where you're headed. It's super dangerous this time of the night, so either I'm going with you or you're not leaving the house tonight, and believe me, I mean it", he said.
I lowered my gaze. Looking at him for a few seconds, I was trying to decide whether to tell him or not. "I received this note today, it said 'Meet me at midnight at the Harriet Tubman Memorial'. I don't know who it was, but a person dropped it when you were at the store today. Something is telling me I have to go meet that someone", I explained. "I just feel like this is important." Rakim looked at me for a while, then he turned his back on me and went upstairs. I stood there like an idiot, not knowing what to do, but after a few minutes, he came back, wearing a red hoodie. "This is like the dumbest thing I've done in a while, but let's go anyway", he sighed as if this was planned, opened the door, and stepped outside.
I followed him slowly. "But Rakim, I think I should come alone. Maybe the person won't come to see me if you're with me?", I asked. He stopped walking and looked at me for a second. "You're not even thankful I'm playing your bodyguard? I could be sleeping, instead, I'm out because of your ass, show some love bruh", he said with a little disappointment in his voice and carried on walking.
"Don't get me wrong, I really appreciate you looking out for me, but-" "Then act like it", he interrupted me. I sighed. He was probably right, I was saver with him, but still...
Nevertheless, New York at night is something different. I loved the vibe outside, it was a peaceful night so far, no gunshots or screams.
When we arrived at the memorial, it was 5 minutes to midnight. The vibe felt tense, Rakim's hand was dwelling on his gun all the time. When it was midnight, I saw a person coming straight towards us from the crosswalk. The guy had pulled the hood of his dark grey jacket deep into the face, so I couldn't make out who he was. He came up to us, stayed a few meters away, and took the hood off slowly.
"Didn't I tell you to come alone?"
//
Who do you think that person could be? It's pretty predictable lol
