It was late evening, and we had just finished eating and were now chilling on the couch. Rakim and Ferg were playing video games, and I was laying on his chest while watching them play, little yawns escaping my lips from time to time. Ferg had just won and laughed at Rakim like he always did, and after a minute, I yawned again, my eyes closing slowly.
"Someone's tired, huh?", I heard Rakim's voice, him looking at me with a smile on his lips. I yawned again before I answered, making him laugh. His laugh was enough to make a big smile spread on my lips. "I'm tired as shit too, let's go sleep?"
I couldn't fall asleep. Rakim's steady breath was telling me he already slept, but I wasn't able to close my eyes. The Mob had been acting differently today, when Rakim and I arrived, everyone shot me a look of sympathy, and later, I had heard Dom and Ferg arguing loudly. Rakim seemed a little off too, but he knew how to cover his feelings, you could never quite tell what was going on behind the facade he had built.
Nevertheless, time passed, and Rakim's birthday was approaching in a little more than a month. I had decided to give him a photo album as a present, filled with all the good memories that me and him, but also the Mob had shared. I had thought a lot about what to get him because it seemed like he had already got everything, but Ferg helped me with the idea and I knew Rocky would like it. I finished it after many hours of work and the help of Ferg who would cover up for me every time I was busy. Rakim got a little suspicious though, he knew I was keeping something from him.
The next day, it was exactly two weeks before his birthday, Rakim wasn't coming home on time, and I was nervously waiting for him. The day had been weird- for the last few weeks, I had pushed the thoughts of something being off away, telling me I was gonna be okay, but today was entirely different.
A few friends shot me strange looks, looking away when I was looking back in their direction, or I noticed whispering, that was shut down when I entered the room. The whole thing was weird, and I was starting to get paranoid.
Back to Rakim though, he was already an hour late, and I ran around the living room, stressing everyone out. "Zara, I'm sure he will show up sooner or later", Joey sighed, reading the newspaper. After looking at him for a second, I realized that I had never actually seen him properly read before, it seemed like he really wanted to distract himself from something.
Shoving that thought away, I called him again.
Nothing.
The minutes passed, and I waited for him by the window. Another hour passed, he had never been that late, I realized as panic welled up inside of me.
I noticed the other members exchanging weird looks, a mix of confusion and nervousness.
Dom had a little frown on his face, the frown he always had when something was going on that he didn't like.
I stared at the black sky, realizing how dependent I had actually become. What if he was injured, maybe even dead? Tears welled up in my eyes, dripping on the floor. I felt all the love I had for him hitting me like a big wave, along with sadness and nervosity.
My heart felt heavier with every minute that passed, while I imagined him- the way he laughed, his jokes, everything. Suddenly, the chaos in my head was interrupted by a short knock on the door. I jumped up, sprinted to the door, opened it rapidly, and there he stood. I ran up to him, hugging him as tightly as I could as if it was the last time.
Rakim hugged me back silently, and as we lay in each other's arms, I noticed he was shaking. I loosened my grip a little to look at him, but he didn't let go, just held me tightly. "Stay", he whispered, sounding so sad it broke my heart. "What happened?", I asked. He didn't answer my question, just slowly went in after looking at me for a long time. I followed him quietly, as he sat down on the couch, followed by a few minutes of very uncomfortable silence. He then pulled out a letter and gave it to me. The moment everyone realized what it was, a few people shook their heads in disappointment. I didn't have a clue what was going on, and the anger was welling up inside of me, I tore the envelope apart.
The letter said something about how my uncle had died, and that I had to go to El Salvador to talk to my other relatives because of his will as he had left me a few of his things. It was true that I had had an uncle in El Salvador, but he died two years ago and I had barely ever known him. This letter was a lie. A cold, fucking lie.
They just wanted me to leave.
