I woke up, heavily breathing. Only darkness was surrounding me, everything seemed dangerous and evil. The curtains were moving, but the window was shut. My heart rate shot up and I felt my body trembling. What if the door opened right now?

Just then, I heard somebody's footsteps approaching.

I squeezed my eyes shut, afraid of what might happen next, but the shuffling steps just passed by the door of the room I slept in. You are not going to fall asleep like that, Zara, a voice in my head whispered. Rakim was sleeping in the room next to mine, maybe I could sneak in there?

If I ran really quickly? That's what I did-I jumped on my feet, sprinted towards the door, in the corridor, and opened the door to Rakim's room. Rakim lay on the bed, halfway wrapped into his thick blanket. The moonlight shone on his perfect face, making his skin shine silvery.

I walked up to him slowly. "Rakim?", I whispered. His eyes opened immediately. He scanned my face, then seemed to remember where he was. He blinked. "Yeah?" "I had a nightmare and can't sleep."

He laughed quietly. "You're acting like a lil kiddo, just lay down and let me sleep, a ni**a tired as fuck." "Thank you so much." "Come here", he said as he moved towards the wall, leaving a pretty big space. I curled up next to him on the soft bed. I noticed a blanket falling over me as I closed my eyes. "Good night, Zara", Rakim said.

"Good night, and thank you", I replied. "No problem", he mumbled, already half asleep.

"You're in danger, you have to run, run away! Now!" I stumbled backward, just to see a boy with a gun that was pointing at me. I couldn't see his face, yet he was so familiar. I turned around again as dizziness overcame me, making me stagger. A warm wrist holding my hand firmly, a gun being held to my head.

I screamed, striking around myself wildly when I noticed my arms were forced down. I opened my eyes. Rakim was pinning my wrists down. "You almost hit me and were screaming like crazy", he said with a glance that made me feel guilty. He slowly let go of my hands and laid down again. "I'm so sorry, Rakim", I said with a shaky voice. "Man, these nightmares are really scaring the shit outta you, aren't they?", he asked. "Mhm", I answered. I felt two arms hugging me from behind and pulling me a little closer. "Calm down, it's not your fault", he said in a low voice. "Try to sleep, aight?"

As if I could sleep like that, I replied in my head.

But in the end, it made me feel a lot safer, plus it was very warm. "Thank you", I whispered. "No problem, really. I could do this every night.

That was probably the moment I realized how much I had started to like him.

But I pushed the thought away, knowing it was causing more problems than there already were.

This was never going to work out.

Apart from that, I was living a pretty unbothered life until the first day of school. I had told Rakim I didn't want to drop out like most of the gang did, and he handled that pretty well.

Looking forward to seeing my best friend Charlotte again, who I just called Charlie, I got ready that day, dressed in some baggy jeans and a hoodie with a pair of Jordans.

I left a note for Rakim, who was still sleeping, grabbed my rucksack and phone and quietly closed the door behind me.

The air hitting me was cold, reminding me that fall was pretty much here- the sky was of dark grey, the few trees on the sideway looked beautiful with their red and orange leaves.

The first thing I saw when I arrived was two girls fighting, the 'ghetto bitches' Nia and Jacky, that was what everybody called them, I just rolled my eyes. It was the first fucking day, and they were already making a scene. They really seemed to need the attention.
