Zara pov.
Would I make it through another night?
I tried to make out my surroundings in the dim light.
I was leaning against an old lantern, with my head tilted, resting on the wall. A few trash cans, the street, dirt, the sound of rain falling.
The hunger was terrible, making me want to throw up. My breathing had become heavier.
The desire to eat grew more uncomfortable with every second, and the wetness of the rain started to penetrate my clothes. I was barely able to keep my eyes open, although I feared to close them.
Recovery. I just wanted to close my eyes for a second, but I knew I had to stay awake.
Another ten minutes passed.
All of a sudden the light started flickering and a few seconds later, I was sitting in complete darkness. I felt my legs uncontrollably shaking, staring at one point in front of me, I hoped my eyes would somehow adjust to the darkness. In the distance, I heard aggressive voices talking. Inconveniently they were getting closer with every breath.
Smoke. It smelled like smoke, which meant they had to be near me by now.
My skin felt like it was burning. I had to get away, no matter what. I got up and immediately felt my ankles and muscles protesting. Ignoring the weakness in my body, I grabbed the little backpack and headed in a different direction. The smell of smoke intensified, sending a feeling through my throat I had experienced too often already. I turned around the next corner, and suddenly saw light- it took me a second to realize the dustbin was burning, hot flames spread on the waste that was laying on the floor. It blocked my view, the smoke was burning inside my lungs. I tried to go on, but my sweater caught fire. In panic, I tried to diminish the flames. After a few attempts, it worked- at least one thing I could be thankful for.
So obviously going that way wasn't possible-I turned around, stumbling, moving away from the deadly heat. A single gunshot tore the silence. I winced, taking notice of how close it was. Another. In my ears, there was a light rap-In horror, I increased my speed. I needed a shelter. Somewhere. Anywhere. Just so I could be safe for the night.
Gasping for air, I looked around. I found myself standing in a square; I was surrounded by high walls covered with ivy, and in every corner, I could make out a little alley.
There were parking cars, too; expensive ones, old ones, average ones. And suddenly, I saw my rescue. It was a car whose back doors were leaving a little gap open-somebody must have forgotten to close it. Without hesitation, I crawled in. It smelled strange here; not bad, but just not like the streets at all. Cologne, that specific smell of cologne people with money wear. In the back, I found a few blankets that I wrapped around my trembling body.
In satisfaction, I closed my eyes, and after a few minutes, I fell asleep.
When I woke up, I was still in the back. The only difference was that the car was driving now. Immediately, adrenaline shot through my veins, but I tried my best to remind myself to keep calm and determine the situation.
Apparently, there were a few guys in the front. At least four or five guys, talking in low voices.
Despite my attempt to hear what they were talking about, I wasn't able to understand their conversation because the sound of the engine was too loud.
Knowing that every noise I would cause could be my last, I was unable to move. The only thoughts that reappeared in my head over again were that I had to get out of here, I had to find a way to survive this, at all costs.
After another five minutes, the car stopped. I heard the sound of the doors opening, laughter, and the front door slamming. I prayed that they wouldn't open the back door-it was ridiculous how I was sending prayers to the same god I cursed a few nights ago. While holding my breath, I closed my eyes, but slowly opened them again after a few seconds.
Staring at the door, it almost felt as if I wanted to summon it. I thought I was lucky for a brief second; however, the door opened.
In shock, I stared at the person that could be seen; I was numb, still unable to move. He directly stared into my eyes and for a second, we both remained dead silent in surprisement.
The boy in front of me was pretty tall; he had a dark skin tone, braids, and a pretty good looking face. I had definitely seen him before, but where? His face was so familiar, I knew that boy, but I couldn't remember. I knew I had to run for my life, but I couldn't move. Slowly, I pressed against the seats, waiting for a reaction. He was still staring at me and I lowered my gaze, then closed my eyes. After a few seconds that felt like forever, he spoke up. "The fuck is you doing in my car?"
