Sasuke had changed. Ever since Ayame left him, he had been acting differently. He wouldn't visit anymore, and would definitely never stay the night. Whenever they saw each other in school, he'd give her a small glance for three seconds, but she'd turn away. His eyes didn't hold the guilt or the apology which she wanted from him.
When asked by her friends, Ayame would say that she realised just who he really was, and she wasn't going to get involved with him. Inside, however, she was incredibly depressed. She missed him, but she wouldn't allow herself for fall for his tricks again. He only wanted her for her blood. That was all he would ever see in her.
She found herself thinking about him during a history lesson a week later. This was one of the few lessons she had where he wasn't in the same room as her, and she usually enjoyed it. She was thinking about him, though, which wasn't good.
"Hey, Ayame,"
Ayame's head snapped up. She found herself looking at Shikamaru. "Hey, Shika."
"Sensei says we're partnering up for this project. We have about...four seconds to protest if we don't want to work with each other." He said, looking at his watch. "Any objections?"
Ayame smiled. "None."
"Good." Shikamaru settled into the chair beside her. "Look, before we start anything on this project, I want to get any awkward things cleared between us, okay?"
Ayame frowned, but nodded.
"If you have a thing with Uchiha, that's fine. I won't get in the way. I learned my lesson when he busted my nose last week," Shikamaru lifted a hand to his still bandaged nose. "But my offer still stands if you can't stand to be with the guy."
She smiled. "You know what? I'd love to go on a date with you." She said, to which Shikamaru looked up at her, looked down, before his head snapped up again.
"Say what?!"
"I'd love to go on a date with you, Shikamaru. I went on a date with Sasuke, and it didn't turn out as I hoped it would. But you're a good guy, unlike him. I think you'd treat a girl right, and to be honest, I'd like it if a guy looked at me as more than just an object. I hate being treated like that."
Shikamaru smiled a genuinely happy grin. "Great! When do you want to go out?"
"I'm free any time apart from after school on Fridays. I have tennis practise."
"Oh, right! I forgot you were in the tennis club!"
Ayame giggled. "It's the only sport I'm good at. Two left feet."
Shikamaru laughed as well. As he next spoke, with each word, he seemed to speed up. "I think it'd be awesome to go out with you- well, uhm, like, actually out! Not as in dating! Well, not if you didn't want to...I'd like to, but if you don't want to, that's fine."
She laughed again. "Shika, calm down. Relax. Take me on a nice date and I might consider it," she said with a teasing smile.
As Shikamaru opened his mouth to speak, the speaker in the corner of the room overrides his voice.
It was the main administrator for the school, Koyama-sensei, who worked in the office. She had never been big fan of Ayame. "Could Yamato Ayame please report to the principal's office?" She spoke in a clear voice, before the mic was switched off again.
"What? Why would he want to see me?" Ayame asked herself, frowning. "Sorry, Shika. I should be back soon."
"It's okay. Just don't get yourself into any more trouble than necessary. I think detention would suck for both of us." Shikamaru gave her a small smile, not which she jumped to her feet and hurried out of the classroom.
