"You are an expert at sorry and keeping lines blurry. Never impressed by me acing your tests"

Your nerves were running rampant, hoping that the wire taped to your chest would go unnoticed. It was the only way that Emily would let you go to the meeting, you refused for anyone to be there. You didn't want anyone else to get hurt, granted it would be rare for Devin to hurt you today. The one thing he insisted on was that Bella never saw what he did for work.

You felt a hand graze your back, the familiar fragrance of his cologne filling the air. "You're late" you noted, watching your daughter play on the playground. "Eh bien, princesse, je devais m'assurer que tu étais seule (Well, princess, I had to make sure you were alone)" His accent was slowly fading the more time he spent in the states.

You fiddled with the sleeves of the sweater you stole from Spencer. It gave you a sense of clarity, you needed him in some form. You felt his fingers brush your hair behind your ear, revealing the fading hickeys on your neck. "Aww, princess you've moved on. It hurts, I miss us" His words stung, the overwhelming feeling to comfort him coming over you. You inhaled deeply, trying to breathe in the scent of Spencer. Trying to feel his hand brushing your hair behind your ear. Trying to remember the courage he gave you. "You could say you miss all that we had, but I don't really care how bad it hurts. When you broke me first."

You felt the tear falling down your cheek as you finally admitted how bad he hurt you. Not just to him, but to yourself. You never accepted the truth, you didn't dare speak it aloud, it hurt to accept it, if you did share details into your past with him it was either the happy memories or a brief explanation of the last year with him.

You sniffled, if Devin had replied to you, you were too deep in thought to hear it. You wiped at your eyes with your sleeve as you saw your daughter run over. Just like that, it was almost like a switch flipping in Devin, toxic, manipulative, and ruthless turned to kind, caring, and loving. He would never show Bella that side of him, the one that caused so much pain for you. It broke you to see her love him so much, especially after you fell for that side of him and all it did was bring you pain in the end.

You faked a smile as you watched your daughter, trying to keep the memories at bay. The love you had for him was strange, it brought you so much happiness, but when it came to sadness, oh it fucking broke you. It was the one thing that confused you, you had only had two loves in your life. It wasn't like you only had two boyfriends, it was just that any of your previous ones before Devin, were just like him. Manipulative, toxic, and abusive. The only love you ever knew before Spencer, the love that caused a war between your brain and your heart.

Your love for Spencer was anything but that. It was real, it was pure. You didn't have to try and find things to love about him. Loving him is as easy as breathing is. It was simple, you knew that he would never hurt you, you could relax around him. Let your guard down and bask in the comfort he gave you. The only time that your brain fought with your heart was, if you truly loved him, it felt so different than all of your past loves.

"Where did you get this necklace princess?" His soft tone drew you out of your thoughts, portraying the scene of his finger hooked around the necklace hanging around Bella's neck. The sight sent a shiver down your spine, "Mommy, she said it was a present from you" Your daughter spoke with a wide smile at her father.

The necklace was a gold chain with a silver ring hanging like a pendant. He looked over at you as he recognized the ring, "Vous l'avez gardé? (You kept it?)" You gave a small nod, keeping your eyes on your daughter. The memory of the necklace coming back vividly.

It was the day after Bella was born, the 23rd of April. You smiled softly at the newborn in your arms, her eyes were closed, sleeping the day away. You heard a faint knock on the door, looking over to see Devin. "Oh you better have coffee" you groaned, hearing a soft chuckle come from him. "I don't princess, but I do have something better" He trailed off walking over to your bedside, smiling down at you and your daughter.

"Nothing is better than coffee, I promise you that" He smiled at your sarcasm, placing a soft kiss on your forehead. He pulled a small box from his pocket, "Just open it, love" you shook your head. "If I move she will wake up, and it took forever to get her down so you open it" you gave him a cheeky grin.

"I know that you aren't the marrying type" he started, opening the small box for you. "Dev, I can't accept this, I love it and I love you but-" he cut you off  "Princess, it's going to go on a necklace for you, I know that you aren't ready for marriage" You gave him a curt nod before replying "Now can I have my coffee?"

You tried to erase the memory but it was one of the few good memories with him. The smile your daughter gave him, reminded you of innocence, she never knew what it was like to be hurt. You would always come up with a reason for why something happened just so she wouldn't have a horrible memory of her father. So she wouldn't know how badly he hurt you. The manipulating side of him.

You sighed softly as you heard his next words, "So, princess how was the museum?" To anyone else, or from anyone else you would've just brushed them off. From him, you were terrified at the question. "Of course you were there, I can't enjoy anything without being terrorized can I?" your voice was hushed

"If you seriously want to hurt Spencer, just hurt me instead. I'm tired of being afraid to leave the house, tired of looking over my shoulder in fear that you'll be there. Okay Devin, come after me not him, but just so you know, you won't only be hurting me, you'll be hurting Bella too." You started, picking your daughter up before looking back at him "Then she'll see the true you, a manipulative, toxic, ruthless killer." With that you walked off, tears falling as you prayed that he wouldn't follow you.
