"And you're the reason, the only thing that keeps me from diving off the deep end"

You looked over at the photo on your nightstand, smiling softly at the calming face staring back at you. You wiped at the tears that began to form in your eyes, missing that face more and more every day.

"It's for the best" you whispered to yourself as you pondered the thought of calling her. The photo portraying you and your four-year-old daughter. It was taken the night before you dropped her off at Emily's. The night before your whole life changed.

You grabbed your phone checking the time, 3:54 am. You dialed Emily's number hoping that she was home, "Em, please can you put her on the phone" You sniffled softly as you spoke those words, tears falling down your cheeks as you waited to hear your daughter's voice. "Mama, when are you coming back?"

Your heart fluttered softly as you heard her voice, trying to compose yourself for her. "Hey princess, I'll try and visit soon I promise, but you have to say with Aunty Em for a bit longer. I miss you so so much darling."

It broke your heart to not see her for the past year, you could sneak in short facetime calls, but you never could visit her. "I miss you too mama" your breath hitched in your throat, holding back a sob. Not wanting the little girl to hear you cry, "I love you so much baby, I'll be there soon I promise."

You heard her soft 'i love you too' before Emily's voice came back, finally letting out the sob "Em, when can I come over? Please I need to see her, you and I both know that this was for the best." She told you that it was for the best, not knowing how Devin would react to Interpol taking down the IRA. "Hey, I know that it's for the best. You can come over this weekend, she's grown so much."

You smiled softly "Thank you Em, for everything, I'll see you both this weekend." With that the line went dead, your sobs growing louder as you cried. You had bottled every single emotion up for a while, just wanting to feel numb.

You blinked back a few tears trying to compose yourself enough to find comfort. After a few minutes, you eventually ended up in front of his door, knocking softly. Hoping he was still awake, as soon as he opened the door, you couldn't keep the tears at bay anymore.

You felt Spencer's arms wrap around you, holding you close to his chest, "What's wrong sweetheart?" his voice was soft as he rubbed your back, trying to calm you down. You shook your head, the tears continuing to fall as you broke down in his arms.

He picked you up, taking you into his apartment shutting the door with his foot. Settling the two of you on the couch. Playing with your hair slightly letting you cry, whispering soft phrases every once in a while. "Everything's gonna be alright, love" you sniffled softly, before wiping at your eyes, finally being able to form a sentence.

"I just miss her so much" You whispered before realizing Spencer has no idea who she is. "Sorry, um it's a little complicated to explain" you murmured as you fiddled with your fingers.

"That's okay love, you don't have to give me the full story. Or even tell me who she is, but I'm sure she misses you too" You gave him a sad smile at his words, "I want to tell you just, will you please not judge me?" Spencer let out a soft laugh "I would never judge you love" His fingers running through your hair.

"I had to leave my 3-year-old daughter, well she's now 4, with Emily before I moved here. I knew something bad was going to happen, I couldn't let her see any of it, not at such a young age." You whimpered out "I haven't seen her or held her in a year, fuck I miss her." Spencer rubbed your back as you started to cry again.

"Darling, you did what was best, your toddler years are important in your development. I'm so sorry you had to leave her, but I'm sure Emily is giving her so much love and telling her all about her mom" His words reassuring you that your choice a year ago was for the best. You nodded and nuzzled closer in his arms.

"Emily makes sure to send me weekly updates. I get to see them this weekend, I just hope she doesn't ask where her dad is. Granted I was the one who raised her, but he still was there." You whispered, leaning your head against his shoulder.

"Hey don't worry about the 'what if's', you'll figure it out as you go. I'm sure she is such a strong girl, just like her mom" Spencer muttered "Try and get some sleep love" placing a soft kiss on your forehead, leaning his head against yours. Relaxing into his arms, your eyes fluttering shut, falling asleep in his arms.
