Yongsun POV
I finally arrive at my hometown. The smell of dirt invades my nostrils and I smile. Smells just like when I was a little kid, running in the streets.
Growing up, I never had a lot of friends. I met lots and lots of people, but never secured a solid friendship with most of them. My parents would always reassure me, telling me that whoever let me slip through their fingers would be the loser in the story. I would smile, feeling as loved as I could. That's what I thought love was: protection, reassurance, steadiness. Falling in love with Moonbyul made me realize that, in the real world, love is pain and sacrifice. Love can only be real when it speaks the truth to our hearts, not just what we desire to hear and see.
I knock on the door, excited to see my parents. The last time I was here was a few years ago, when I payed a visit. That's when I got the guts to tell them I wasn't straight. At the time, they were the only people who got to know that, and I struggled to let that out to anyone else. Even though I was raised by Christian parents, they put their beliefs aside when it came to that, and always respected me as I was.
“Yongsun!” The door opens and my mom promptly hugs me.
“Hi, mom.” I chuckle. “I can't breathe.”
She laughs and pats my back, parting the hug and taking my luggage from my hands.
“We were so excited that you were coming. We have big news for you.” She sits down at the couch and invites me to do the same. She serves me some tea, I drink and we chat a bit, before my dad shows up from the bedroom.
“Oh, my baby.” I get up and he gets closer for a hug, lifting me up in the air. “You lost some weight, Yongsun? You know, you do look good with a skinny face.” He caresses my cheek. “Hm... Give me your phone, we have a rule here.” He smiles and looks at my mom.
“What?” I ask, confused, and look at my mom too.
“Don’t worry, Yongsun. We created this rule as a motivation to spend more time with our girl. You can have it back as soon as we finish telling you the news.” She smiles and I sit down again, handing her the phone.
“What was it that you wanted to tell me so bad?” I giggle and shake my legs in enthusiasm.
“Remember when you told us you liked girls too?” My mom sighs. “Well, we figured it was already time for that phase to be over. We wanted to help you get rid of that sin, we couldn't stand seeing our baby suffering the way you were. So, right after you left, we talked to someone from the neighborhood. They have a son who really liked you from the pictures we showed him. They also have some money that could help you make a living here. You'd be steady and in love, finally.” She smiles and tries to take my hand, but I pull back.
“W-what do you mean?” My eyes get teary and my head hurts from all the information I just got.
“What your mom is saying is that, basically, you're going to get married soon.” He smiles. “You’re gonna fall in love with him, he's the purest boy. He's a doct-”
“I don't care.” I interrupt and get up. “I didn't come here to get cured. There's no cure for love. So, if you don't mind, I'll kindly take my phone and go back. I actually have a comeback soon, so I really shouldn't be here.”
My mother gets up and hides the phone behind her back.
“I’m sorry, Yongsun, that the sins you have inside of yourself aren't letting you speak on your own behalf. We know you want to get better, you wouldn't come here just because.” She comes closer. “Let us help you like we always have.”
I shake my head in disbelief. “You never helped me. You never even believed in me, and look how far I came. I'm not letting you ruin my life, not after giving up on everything else to pursue what I loved. You don't know what's best for me, you never did. It's like I'm your daughter, but only for what's convenient, right?” I walk to the door, but my father blocks me and locks it, putting his hand on my shoulder.
“It’s for your own good.” He whispers, and I don't remember anything else after that. I knew that tea wasn't tasting good.
