"AND MAY WE HOPE THAT HIS SOUL REACHS THE ISLE OF THE BLEST, because if anyone deserved it, it was Charles Beckendorf", Jake Mason finished sorrowfully as they all bowed down their heads in respect.
A few of the Hephaestus campers lifted Beckendorf's 'chain-mail' shroud above the flames.
Zola didn't see how it would burn, but the Fates must've been helping out as the metal melted in the fire and turned to golden smoke, which rose into the sky.
The campfire flames always reflected the campers' moods, and today they burned black.
Zola prayed and hoped that he would reach the Isle of the Blest and that everyone knew how important and brave he was and how much he deserved the best afterlife more than anyone.
After the assembly, most of the other campers drifted off to their afternoon activities but Zola spotted Percy, sitting on a rock just staring at the dying fire. She also noticed Silena nearby crying, while Clarisse and her boyfriend Chris Rodriguez tried to comfort her.
She approached Percy. "Hey Aqua Boy", she started.
"Hi Z", he said quietly as he continued to stare at the fire.
"You know", she started slowly. "You shouldn't blame yourself.."
"But..I could have done something to prevent it", he said turning to face her. "I'm the fucking son of a sea god and I still felt helpless...against Kronos".
Zola was silent as she let him rant all that he was thinking to her.
"And I'm supposed to be the damn prophecy kid and I'm helpless against Kronos? I'm supposed to save this camp and I can't even save one...", his voice becoming unsteady. He took a deep breath to calm himself. "Beckendorf was supposed to go to college in the fall. He had a girlfriend, lots of friends, his whole life ahead of him..and the worst thing about this whole thing is that...What if the Princess Andromeda was a ploy?...What if Kronos let us blow up that ship so we'd lower our guard? That means that Beckendorf sacrificed himself for...", he trailed off silent.
Zola motioned with her eyes if she could sit on the rock beside him and Percy shifted across. She sat down next to him and breathed deeply.
They both sat, knees touching and not saying a word to one another as they both faced the fire. Zola understood that Percy needed comfort but silence in this situation and she would be there for him.
After a few minutes, Percy spoke quietly, "Thank you, Z".
"You don't need to thank me..Percy. You've got a lot of pressure and you can't do everything. You're are not Jesus".
Percy snorted. "I think you hit the nail on the head with that one".
Zola started at him in disbelief before laughing into her hands for gods knows how long. "I'm going to hell for laughing at that".
