Laurel
Happy New Year? What part of burying my mother is supposed to be happy? How is abandoning my childhood home to move to a new country across the globe because my mother was murdered supposed to make me feel loaded with joy?
There is no happiness left within me.
I for the life of me couldn't figure out what I had to do with Death Eaters anyways. I was the product of a no-maj woman, and pureblood man. Perhaps that's the connection though. From what I've heard when it came to that Lord Voldemort guy, he didn't care too much for muggles.
I couldn't think about solving a mystery right now though. I had far too many other things on my mine. Well, one in particular. One of the most traumatic moments that I'd ever witnessed.
I had just opened up my last gift from my mother on Christmas morning. An emerald necklace with a serpent wrapped around the gem. "Mom! This had to have cost a fortune! I can't accept this!" I told her. She smiled.
"I didn't spend a dime. It's a family heirloom. I thought now would be a great time to pass it on to you."
I smiled at the beautiful necklace, but I don't know what green gems and snakes have to do with my family heritage. Maybe it was from my dad. I never met him. My mom said he hasn't been into the picture since I was a baby, and there were no photos anywhere in the house that could give me an idea as to what he looked like, as I looked nothing like my mom.
The only thing I knew about him was he was a wizard, and he was from somewhere in England.
Mom and I were enjoying our Christmas dinner when everything went dark. I grabbed my wand out of my pocket, I was ready to do what I needed to do, to protect my mother. She couldn't defend herself against them, and though I'm only sixteen, I could certainly try.
"Who's there?" I yelled at the masked intruders. It took a minute, but I finally registered who they were.
Death Eaters.
Why though? Why were Death Eaters here?
"I love you." My mother whispered to me before a bright green light emerged from one's wand, killing her in an instant. They turned to me, taking slow steps, inching closer, but they disapparated and left me alone in the dark.
"El."
I shook my head, snapping back into reality. "You're doing it again." Rachel groaned.
"Of course she is," Clayton added. "Her mother was killed in front of her, Rach. You don't just stop thinking about that overnight."
"Will you two shut up? It's bad enough my mind keeps replaying that night. I don't need you two fighting in front of me." I snapped.
Rachel and Clayton have been my best friends since my first year at Ilvermorny. Rachel and I were both sorted into Thunderbird. That's also where I met Clayton.
Clayton and I have been dating since our third year. I use the term dating loosely because we've never officially put a label on what we are. For over a year we've flirted a lot back and forth. Kissed...a lot. We even went as far as going down on each other, but that's it.
Either way, I was going to miss him.
"Do you really have to move?" Rachel groaned while she helped me pack my things. I gave her a sad nod. I didn't want to move away to live with some woman I had never met before, but she was the only living legal guardian that I knew of. Well, apart from my estranged father.
