A little too late (A Pete angst Story)

From the moment Wynter could understand what feelings was she knew she was head over heels for her childhood best friend Pete. She never wholeheartedly confessed though, why? Because every year she would lightly bring up the topic of them dating and he would laugh it off and state that he only saw her as his best friend. Wynter would respect his wishes and drop the topic quickly switching to the topic of video games and all would be forgotten until the next year when she would try again to see if anything changed. Wynter's world has always been...him. They grow up together and are closer than close until high school when Pete becomes popular and Wynter just fades to the background. Pete does not purposely ignore her but it just gradually kind of happens and he never has time for her anymore. She tries to hold onto the friendship by supporting his dreams of becoming a professional gamer and influencer but she becomes just another fan. It also doesn't help that a girl named Rose catches his interest and they soon become a couple. By the end of high school, Pete and Rose are inseparable and they decide to move so Rose can go to college and Pete can better pursue his dream. Wynter had made a promise to herself at the end of freshman year that if she could not get Pete back as a friend by her 21st birthday she would leave him forever.
