Evie has spent the last 575 years on the North American continent, now called America, the Pure and Clean. She smiles, volunteers and makes cakes and pastries for her neighbors, hiding away her demon blood. She wants nothing to do with her estranged husband, the King of Hell, and is only able to communicate with her son secretly through demon post. She deludes herself that the world is a beautiful, happy place until Gran, the woman who raised her, suddenly dies. It sends her demonic energy into a tailspin and awakens the memories of her childhood. Diyiren, the current King of Hell, can only think of getting to Evie, but he's unwelcome in PC. When Gran's cause of death is discovered-murder-Diyiren explodes. Wary of maintaining peace with his human allies, Diyiren pulls every string to get to Evie. Meanwhile, Brantley, Evie's neighbor, worries about the demon loving girl who is suddenly an orphan. Unaware of Evie's demonic history, Brantley tries to foster and care for Evie. But Evie is too overwhelmed by her own emotions and the flood of memories drowning her to pay any attention to a human who has tripped up and fallen in love with her.
