Tara's POV
Why is he here? Why is he watching me? Why is that vanilla smell here? Why does it seem to be coming from where he is? Surely I'm not the only one who can smell it? Maybe my sisters senses just haven't developed enough to pick out such a light scent? I'll try my theory on Dana.
"Dana? Can you smell anything funny?"
" Erm.. No? Like what?"
Sniffing the air before I answer, just to check I'm not going mad, I pick up something else too.
"Sort of like vanilla and well.. Oreos.. "
She looked around and I caught her sniffing the air before turning back to look at me with a confused expression on her face.
"No. I can't smell any of that but I can smell pancakes. They're my favourite food so.."
"So? What does that matter?"
"Right. When you find your mate, they will first seem attractive as their scent will appear to you as it will smell like something that already appeals to you."
She looked at me with wide eyes while waiting for me to click but I didn't. So I just stared back at her. We stayed looking at each other for around a minute before she groaned and slapped a hand to her forehead.
"Ergh! Tara! It means our mates are here! I can smell mine but you can't, an you can smell yours but I can't!"
She's got to be kidding me if she thinks I believe that. To show her I didn't believe her I just shook my head, I didn't know what else to do. I thought I was mad, turns out we're just as crazy as each other.
"Tara. I'm serious."
"Look Dana, you might believe that our mates are here. But you've heard the stories of how rare and hard it is to find them and how long it can take. Some people never find theirs. So isn't it slightly too coincidental that we both find ours tonight? No. I don't believe my mate is here but I'm determined to find out where that smell is coming from. "
"Tara! What is wrong with you! That smell belongs to someone and that someone belongs to you!"
"Ok. Ok. Whatever you say. Anyway, lets forget this for a while, I wanna dance don't you?"
"Yes actually. This will prove I'm right."
I could tell there was a puzzled expression on my face when I looked at her but I couldn't help it. "How?" I asked.
"Simple. If you can smell him, he can smell you too and when he noticed you dancing amongst other guys, he won't be able to stop himself from coming over." She had a grin like that of a Cheshire Cat plastered on her face, as if she thought this plan would really work. However it soon turned into a frown at the snort that escaped me.
"Oh c'mon Dana! Like thats gunna happen! Lets just go have some fun!" With that said, I dragged her to the centre of the room and dance floor where we began to grind upon each other.
From what I overheard from conversations around us, it turns out the children's party that my sister is attending is in the room next door to ours. This one was hired by her parents for the older generations of her guests, however no alcohol is allowed. This put my mind at ease because at least now I know where my sister had disappeared to.
I was lost between my thoughts and my dancing when I felt warmth on the back of my body and something moving up and down my back. I froze and turned round. Some boy slightly older than me was standing there. He had dirty blonde hair and blue eyes and his teeth gleamed from his lopsided grin. On impulse of seeing the grin on his face, my hand swung up and collided with the right side of his face, forcing his head to turn towards the left. When he slowly brought himself back round to face me, I noticed his eyes were now a blazing royal blue. The anger and heat radiating from them was enough to cook a joint of beef on. Just what was his problem.
