" Could this be it?"

Sophie POV

The next day, night fell and stroke midnight, I wore my cloak with my moonlark pendant.

I sighed. As I put on my hood, I opened the door. I crept out through the same passage way and ran into the dark woods. As I passed tree by tree, I finally saw the gleaming river in the starlight.

As I breathed in the refreshing air, ruffles could be heard in the bushes. A pair of teal eyes met mine. Fitz's eyes.

        " Hey," he greeted.

        " Hi," I replied with a smile.

After that, there was an awkward tension between us. I bit my lip as I saw Fitz wringing his hands.

" How did it go with the Neverseen?" Fitz finally asked.

" Horrible. They got away," I replied frustrated.

" Ease the frustration there. I don't think I want to see you erupting like a volcano," Fitz joked.

As much as I wanted to laugh, I somehow couldn't.

" Hey, what's wrong?" Fitz asked, full of concern.

" It's just that it was all my fault that I let them escape. I'm not fit to do this," I sighed.

" Of course you are! I mean look at you being so powerful. Everybody loves you. That's why they chose you to be the  leader," Fitz said, a little disappointed that Sophie doubt herself.

" Even you love me?" I asked.

Obviously Fitz couldn't see that I was actually teasing, " Wha... wha... what. Of course I do. Just not that way. Not that I dont love you. I do just not-"

" Fitz, I was just teasing," I informed him and he flushed in embarrassment.

" I... I knew that," he mumbled but I still heard him.

I just rolled my eyes, " Thanks anyways."

" Thanks? For what?" Fitz asked, bewildered.

" For confronting me. Your words made me feel a lot better," I said and I felt heat rising to my cheeks.

" Am I making the brave moonlark blush?" Fitz questioned himself as he laughed.

" Wha... wha... wha- Of course not!" I yelled.

This only made Fitz laugh harder and I huffed. This boy maybe good looking but he is a handful.

" So you finally admit I'm good looking?" Fitz smirked.

" Ha ha very funny," I deadpanned.

We talked into the night when I realised I had been here for way too long.

         " Hey, Sophie?" Fitz said.

         " Hmmm?" I asked.

" I wanted to tell you something-" but I cut him off.

" Stop, Fitz. Sorry... I just. Look, I can't take anymore information that I need to worry about. I need to take it step by step so I hope you understand," I mumbled the last part.

It was when I realised Fitz crossed the river, " Hey, I get it."

" But... I loved talking to you today," he said, not quite meeting my eyes.

" Me too, Fitz. Talking to you makes me feel... at peace," I said and we both shared a smile.

" I'll see you soon, Sophie," Fitz said and cupped my cheek like I did before.

" Good luck, Sophie," Fitz said and kissed my cheek. His lips giving me tingles on my cheek. He pulled away and looked into my eyes.

I couldn't help but gulp. Fitz fingers lingered on my cheek. With that, he ran back to his side and into the woods.

I stood there shock and I wondered. Could this mean something?
