Chapter Twenty: Desperation

Surprise again! It's officially new year where I am so happy new year to all of you, my dear readers! I felt bad about leaving a cliff-hanger...so I quickly whipped up this chapter (while drunk HAHAHAHA it's new year so I'm also celebrating :D) I wish for every single one of you to be safe and sound at all times, and to have good things come your way this 2021 <3 Let me know what you guys think of this chapter, and I hope you enjoyed it! :D

Hanji felt a surge of raw anger as they grabbed Levi's collar harshly, asking the male in a dangerous tone, "What do you mean she's missing? Weren't you supposed to be with her at all times during the expedition?"

It was rare to see Hanji in such a state that even Erwin was taken aback by the sudden action. No one dared to help Levi in any way, in fear of getting into Hanji's warpath. Hanji looked enraged, effectively changing the atmosphere in the headquarters, as no one had ever seen them get this angry before - no one had any idea on how to act or what to do, and no one was idiotic enough to try and tell them to calm down.

Levi didn't respond to what Hanji had asked, and they let him go roughly before storming over to where the other cadets were. Armin had dismounted from his horse as well, his worry evident on his face as Hanji approached them.

"Would anyone mind telling me what happened?" Hanji asked in a thinly veiled frustrated tone, their desperation showing on their features. Hanji's hands were balled up into fists, their lips were set in a thin line, but most of all, Hanji's eyes were utterly merciless, as if anyone who stood on their way would get annihilated on the spot.

Jean was the one who answered first, his voice full of emotion, "[Y/N] went after Captain Levi, but we were all surprised to find Captain return sometime later, without [Y/N]. We don't think they met at all, [Y/N] must have gotten lost."

"We tried to wait for her to return, but it was already starting to get dark and there were still no signs of her," Eren added as he dismounted, followed by Mikasa who shared the same distressed expression.

Hanji looked as though they wanted to say something, but thought otherwise. Instead, they made a sudden departure, heading back inside the headquarters without another word.

"Squad Leader Hanji?" Moblit asked gingerly as he knocked on Hanji's office, unsure of what to do to help after seeing them storm off just a few moments ago.

There was no response, though Moblit could hear movement coming from inside. He tentatively opened the door and saw his superior putting their gear on, as though they were preparing to ride out.

Hanji merely glanced at him as they said, "I'll be heading out after midnight, no one must know about this."

At this point, discouraging Hanji would almost be like convincing titans not to eat humans - it was futile. Hanji wasn't one to give up on anything after all, especially now that it concerned [Y/N], who was someone they deeply cared for. If Moblit was allowed to assume, it seemed as though Hanji had finally fallen in love for the first time.

At Hanji's response, Moblit blinked in disbelief before finally being able to say, "How will you be able to get past Commander Erwin?"

Hanji paused in their ministrations, followed by a few moments of silence as they glanced at Moblit, "Even the King wouldn't be able to stop me from looking for [Y/N]."

Moblit could only sigh, nodding in understanding before he soon left the room, leaving the scientist alone with their thoughts. Hanji, on the other hand, felt frustrated, worried, afraid, and angry all at once. The initial emotion was anger and frustration, mostly directed at Levi, though if they were to be honest, the anger they felt was a distraction and to cover up the gnawing fear - the possibility that [Y/N] might have been killed.
