Tomorrow we are leaving for Berlin, and still, I haven't been able to see London. Rylan hasn't given me an open window to escape her prison. She is too good to be true, which is turning everything in me into anger.
I don't understand where my father found her. Because I have a feeling she might be in the wrong line of work. She should go back to the military, where she can use her potential or something else for that matter.
I looked up from my breakfast and up to Rylan. She gazes around with a firm look on her face. She seems to be aware of everything, and I'm wondering if she is doing it on purpose or if it's only a habit.
"What did you do in the military?" I asked and took a bit of my English muffin. Rylan faced me, baffled by my question.
"I did nothing," She answered and kept looking around herself again. I rolled my eyes and let out a loud sigh, which caught her attention.
"I'm only asking what you were and what you did," I shrugged.
"Fine," She shook her head in defeat.
"I was in the Infantry," She said, and I watched her in confusion because I have no idea what that is.
"Foot soldiers, if that makes it easier to understand," She explained.
"I think it does; care to tell me what you did?" I wondered, finally getting somewhat through that cold and hard wall of hers.
"I was first stationed to do base defense; then I was moved into patrol operations, and a couple of years after that, I was thrown into escort operations. Sometimes they would also put me into hostage rescue, which wasn't that often really," She shrugged, and my eyes widened to all the information she gave me.
"It was back and forth a lot, depending on where they needed me, but it was mostly to do escort," She said and looked down at her finger that was tapping on the table.
"Did you enjoy it?" I asked, and her blue eyes ended back up at me.
"I did, yeah," She smiled lightly.
"Then why don't you do it anymore?" As the seconds turned into minutes, I took the silence as she didn't want to answer me.
"Well, the fact that you did escort in the military explains a lot," I chuckled, and she smiled a little to that.
"Usually, the person or the thing that is being escorted don't complain," She backfired, and I placed my hands over my heart as if it had hurt.
"Don't you think I have a right to complain?" I wondered and leaned back in my chair, finding this conversation interesting.
"I can understand that you are frustrated, Hadley, but you can be in danger whether you like it or not," She said, and I let out a breath through gritted teeth.
"I didn't choose this life, soldier. It was chosen for me. I wanted to go to art school when I finished high school, but my dad refused. He wanted me to take online classes for my safety, which I declined because he wanted to isolate me. I ended up with no education and no work because my father is so narrowed mind that he believes that I should take over the company when he can't," I informed her, but she didn't show any trace of emotion on her face.
"I can't seem to ever get what I want, so why should I give my father the pleasure of giving him what he desires from me?" I questioned. I know I'm doing what he wants me to do now, but to be fair, he pays for my bills. But I wouldn't have been so dependent on him if I got to go to the college I wanted, the education I wanted, and the job I wanted.
"At least you got what you wanted," I muttered to Rylan, and her eyebrows raised.
"You think because I worked in a job that I enjoyed, I got what I wanted?" She asked, and I shrugged in response.
"At least you had the option to choose, soldier," I smiled ironically at her.
"How do you think it feels like to grow up having someone like you following every step of the way? To have a bodyguard in the classroom, students being scared to be around me, friends that kept coming and going because they are either frightened or annoyed that someone else is constantly around. They might not always be in hearing sight, but it still made them uncomfortable," I blurted out in frustration as Rylan listened to me intently.
"I can't even date, and when I do, they either leave or stay for a little while until they can't take it anymore. It's painful, soldier, knowing that I can't have a normal life, normal life with someone else," I said, thinking about all the women that had left me. Every one of them is saying the same thing over and over again that they want freedom, someone who isn't tied down by someone and as well as my father. All the things I have wanted since I was eight years old. It might not be entirely a prison, but it feels like it most of the time.
"I can see why you are angry," Rylan said, and I furrowed my eyebrows at her words. I think that is the first time I have ever heard one of my bodyguards say to me.
"But making it more difficult for me to take care of you doesn't solve the issue, Hadley,"
"No, I know that, but it makes it more fun for me," I grinned.
"And how has that worked out for you?" She smiled cheekily and I clenched my jaw.
"You seem to know what you are doing, soldier, which gives me a challenge for once, so don't be too confident with your abilities just yet," I comment and took a sip of my coffee, which I know have turned cold by now, but it's still good.
"I guess it's going to be interesting for the both of us then,"
