Captain Hall stood outside of (Y/n)'s door, an oily smile on display. The girl was shocked to see him there, and she briefly forgot what she was doing just a moment ago.
It seemed he had the power to do that. Whenever Eric showed up, it was almost as if (Y/n) was put into a trance. Her legs wobbled, she stumbled with her words, and her glabella built up sweat. She remembered their encounter at the library. It sure was an unusual place for a higher-up to be, so how did he know she was there? Did (Y/n) like her Captain? No, the real question was does the Captain like (Y/n)?
The girl tried to avoid wandering off too far before she started mumbling to herself. Eric emanated confidence, a characteristic that the girl was both drawn to and jealous of. He offered his arm up to her and invited, half demanding and half gently:
"Follow me (L/n)."
And so, without much option or need to deny, (Y/n) closed the door behind her and left, any previous thoughts forgotten.

It was hot, even for an early morning. The girl couldn't tell if the beads of sweat pooling on her forehead were from the ardent sunlight or from the debilitating training Captain Hall had her go through.
He was her superior, she couldn't go against him. But she was so tired. She needed a break. (Y/n) might've passed out if she continued going. It felt like her head would explode after all that running and jumping. Gathering up all the courage she could muster, the soldier took in a big breath and huffed out.
"Captain, I-I'm sorry but-" Another breath. "I'm really tired. Can we please take a break?"
By we, she meant I. Eric looked down on her as she sat down. His eyes briefly glazed over with intense emotion and he stared at her deeply. She thought he was angry - perhaps even disappointed - that she was so weak.
Little did she know, Eric has very different feelings towards her.
(Y/n) was now laying on the floor, few cares in the world as she admired the fluffy yellow clouds that passed by. She closed her eyes and fought the urge to sleep right there and then.
Her almost meditative state was interrupted with a slight nudge to her side. Eric held a water bottle up to her. As she reached out to grab it, he shook his head and lifted her chin with his hand. Not looking into it, the girl accepted the water that slowly trickled down her throat, cooling her exhausted body. (Y/n) thought she heard him mutter "good" under his breath, but decided to brush it off as the wind.
"You did well (Y/n)" the Captain broke the silence "you're stronger than I thought." He seemed pensive; his gaze was distant and unfocused, his lips slightly parted as if he were recollecting something. She would've been distracted by his appearance had she not been pondering his words.
(Y/n) couldn't really tell if that was a compliment. Stronger than I look? Does that mean I look weak? Her face probably reflected her thoughts because Eric took her hands. "Oh, I don't mean it in a bad way. You just look so... delicate. As if you need protection." He turned to face her with an adoring smile. His eyes screamed a hidden message at her, but (Y/n) was deaf to such signals.
The girl, now a bit flustered, tucked a stray piece of hair back. Stupid short hair won't stay in place, she tsked to herself. "Well, I guess that defeats the purpose of being here then. I need to be strong."
Eric smiled at her antics, not convinced that the girl was capable of taking care of herself. Better if she overestimates her abilities. "I suppose so. Shall we go?"

The pair neared (Y/n)'s home. They had been bantering about silly, non-important things. Eric took her tired state as an opportunity to ask questions about her life.
"Oh, and there's that roommate, Rory right?" He inquired nonchalantly. (Y/n) scratched her head. She had spent the whole day without seeing her once and didn't even think about her friend. Part of her felt guilty, they still had matters to discuss.
"It's, um, Robin, and I actually haven't seen her all day."
"Oh, really?" His brows lifted. "Isn't that just normal? I wouldn't stress too much about it."
(Y/n) decided to follow his advice. She went inside and rested before dinner. Hopefully Robin would turn up by then.

Chris and (Y/n) were walking back to the living compound ever so slowly. Dinner was surprisingly good, which even made them both get a sneaky second plate. They talked about their day, considering neither of them had seen each other. (Y/n) found it strange that Robin still hadn't showed up, especially considering Chris didn't mention seeing her. Nonetheless, she decided not to question him. Robin was an adult and Chris was most definitely not her babysitter.
"I'm so full." Chris complained, clutching his stomach.
"I- don't regret it. Why isn't food always as good as this?" The girl slurred her words, consequence of the heavy weight inside her pulling her down.
As they were almost by (Y/n)'s doorstep, something shiny caught her attention. She saw what seemed to be a brief light flicker a couple of meters behind her cabin. Considering her shared house was toward the edge of the compound and a bit further away from the other soldier living spaces, it would be strange for someone to be walking around here and drop something. The girl called her friend's attention to the location and both of them neared the now brighter, golden light source.
(Y/n) scooted down to floor level and went to pick up the small item from the ground, only to find it wouldn't budge. The size and color indicated it was a badge. Looking a bit further into it, she noticed the back of the coin-shaped object was attached to a piece of light green fabric, which was buried deeper into the ground. The girl attempted a harsher tug at it and tore the badge along with a piece of the dirty cloth. Embroidered into it was the letter R and something that was torn off.
A soldier badge, light green clothes, the initial R... Why is this buried--
Although her heart hoped for her to be wrong, her brain couldn't be lied to.
Is this really what I think it is?
