(Y/n) felt the wind whooshing past her ear as a projectile zoomed to the other side of the field. Although the most advanced technologies were widely in use, many aspects of weapons and fighting were rudimentary. There were laws which strictly controlled the use of technological weaponry. Even if used in training, something like this could lead to years in international prison.
The vast field was filled with people in brown and green uniforms. Some looked bored, some looked scared, some looked confused. The girl's mind wandered to the thought of how many recruits there actually were. The Empire didn't usually share numbers, so she had no idea how big the soldiery was supposed to be.
A familiar figure approached the front of the group. With a powerful cough, Captain Hall called the whole group's attention and the faint conversation simmered into silence. He eyed the people in front of him carefully, his gaze lingering a bit longer as he looked at (Y/n). Before the stare became too long to be normal, however, he corrected his posture and declared seriously:
"Welcome recruits and those of you who have been here already. I'm Captain Eric Hall." It was easy to tell by his smile that he was a very charismatic person. The only thing going through (Y/n)'s mind was what did he use this charisma for. Being polite and well-liked came with its perks, and Eric Hall made the most out of it.
"You might not understand a lot about how our soldiery works, but I assure you that you will be accustomed in no time."
The first exercise of the day was to run laps. The Captain explained this would be part of their daily routine. (Y/n) and Robin began running together, but Robin soon went ahead of her as she was clearly prepared for a more intense workout.
As she ran, (Y/n) could feel her lungs compressing as her breathing became less and less controlled. At the corner of her eye, she could see Captain Hall looking at her intently. His eyes were scrutinizing her every move. This made her want to run faster and act more fit.
After time was up, everyone joined back at the center of the field. As the captain explained their next assignment, human-sized targets emerged and hovered into the far end of the area. He explained how they would start easy since it was their first day, then proceeded to describe a very complex day of training.
When he was done, people began moving over to a large crate next to the wall and taking out their weapons. As (Y/n) peered inside, she saw a black metallic structure sitting at the bottom. As she picked it up, the girl was surprised by the weapon's weight.
(Y/n) felt the crossbow weighing on her arms as she walked to one of the targets. She picked one of the arrows and placed it on the trench of the bar-like structure. The tip of the arrow sat lightly at the center of the arc. With one hand on the foregrip and another on the trigger, she looked around to see what the others were doing. Some people were still figuring out how to hold the crossbow, others hadn't even loaded them yet. (Y/n) seemed to be among the few who were ready and awaiting instructions.
On cue, Captain Hall looked at the group with a stern expression and asked them to start. (Y/n) briefly glimpsed at him. It was hard to figure out if he was angry because some people weren't even ready yet or if it was because whoever was ready didn't start already, or maybe he wasn't actually angry and he only wanted to impose authority.
Captain Hall's sharp gaze examined each of the soldiers in front of him. There was pressure. So much pressure. He had to get them ready and there was so little time. But they couldn't know what lied ahead, what the Empire's plans were, and how the soldiery fit into all of this. Too absorbed in his own thoughts, Eric didn't realize that he was being watched. (Y/n), the recruit he helped a couple of days ago, looked at him curiously. His gaze softened. Although she was new, she seemed to be one of the first ones to have her weapon ready. Even with no instructions, the girl shot an arrow in the best way she could. Obviously, there was a lot to improve: posture, aim, stance. But this was the real test. And she had passed it without even realizing it. This girl certainly sparked his interest, and Eric would make sure to keep an eye on her during her training.
A/N: thank you for the support!
Captain Hall be acting weird, huh? What do you think will happen next?
I was reading the first few chapters in order to answer your comments and I already want to edit my work ahahha
Does that happen to you to when you're writing a book? Like, do you already want to change what you did a couple of chapters before?
I don't know if I'm making any sense, it's really late.
Anyway, thank you for reading thus far!
