(Y/n) was tucked away in her room for what felt like an eternity. She hadn't seen Max on her way there - or anyone else for that matter. Thankfully her shift was nearly over, so she wasn't leaving any areas unattended. It's not like she was really needed for her job anyway - who would be dumb enough to invade the fortress she was in?
She kept replaying the encounter from earlier.
The digital clock beeped to announce the hour. Dinner time. She wanted nothing more than to stay put, but her better judgement reminded her that it wouldn't be smart to hide for much longer. She put her shoes back on, which had been carelessly removed by the door, and headed out.
(Y/n) was the first recruit to arrive this time. Rigel was there, a furrowed brow in his usually stoic face. He stared her down as she quietly made her way to a seat - the farthest one from him for that matter. She averted her gaze to the table, but could feel the heat radiating off her face as the tall man kept glaring at her. Did he know about earlier? If that guy was some important assistant of the Emperor, I'll definitely be in trouble for interrupting whatever he was doing. If he was actually some type of intruder, I'll be in trouble for letting him get away. There's no good way out of this...Daring to cross his eyes, she looked up for a brief moment and regretted it instantly. Rigel's mouth twitched and he uttered lowly "you don't know just how much trouble you got yourself into." He looked somber, almost scary.
Luckily, Daniel and Will could be heard from down the hall. They came in without pausing whatever conversation they were having and sat down opposite (Y/n). Daniel swiped a stray hair from his face and turned to her.
"So, how was the first day? Shouldn't Max be with you?"
She looked at the boys before stealing another quick glimpse at her boss. "Uhm, yeah it was ok. Just trying to get to know the place." Will hummed in response, not minding that she didn't answer the second question.
"I'm right here my followers, no need to fret." Max walked in with a bright smirk and sat down next to (Y/n). "This place really fooled me, I almost thought this job would be exciting. But no, we're here just for show."
"Well, our day was pretty good, it was actually kind of fun looking around." Daniel said.
"Yeah, this place is a maze." Will added.
Max started retelling the events of the day. "Whatever you did wasn't more exciting than what happened to us. We're on patrol and suddenly there's this loud noise..." He added pauses and intonation for dramatic effect. He was a good storyteller, but at that point (Y/n) zoned out from the conversation. They proceeded to talk about different things, and the girl was glad to be making connections early on. With everything that had happened with Robin and Christopher, she didn't want to be alone in this new place. Everything happened so fast, and the meaningless banter with Robin felt like ages ago now...
"(Y/n)!" Max waved his hand in front of her face and she jolted back.
"We just wanted to know if you're going to eat anything else or if you're coming."
She looked at her plate, which had somehow emptied itself in the last few minutes, and stood up. She was about to respond, when another voice broke the silence.
"(L/n), you stay here."
No update in a long time, I still want to write, generic excuses etc etc. I'm going to make this short. No more promises that I know I won't keep. Am I motivated to finish this book? No. Am I running out of ideas? Yes. But I am going to finish this, even if it kills me.
As always, thank you for reading and I hope the quality doesn't plummet in the coming chapters. <3
