Little a/n in the end <3

The monorail ride was silent. A couple of the boys slept while another messed with some sort of technology. The small group of bodyguards camouflaged into the night, but (Y/n) could see their stiff shoulders beneath the dark robes.

The girl looked outside the many windows of the shuttle. There wasn't a lot to admire; just the world she was used to. The red ground looked more muted at night. Although the sky was much darker than back at the training compound, there was still some misplaced brightness emanating from the smoky atmosphere. Overall, nothing impressive, (Y/n) thought.

As her eyelids weighed down, the young woman decided to surrender to her biological needs. Her sleep was short lived though. The overhead lights soon turned on and she blinked a few times to focus her blurry vision. Outside, the image of a grandious building came into view. It was hard to describe as (Y/n) had never seen a construction of such size and structure. Several dark graphite slabs extended into large domes. Lower and upper-level bridges connected the parts together, and most of the walls consisted of tinted glass, most likely bulletproof. It was a beast of a building, probably big enough to fit the whole population of the Empire. The bottommost floor had proper walls made out of some metal (Y/n) couldn't make out.

As the shuttle approached the building, two sliding doors opened to make way for the passengers. They entered a long and wide tunnel, sufficiently illuminated by square lights on either wall. Next to the girl,  a blond stirred awake. If she remembered correctly, that was Will, who she hadn't formally met but was polite enough to smile at her when she entered the shuttle. He looked around and seemed awed by the perfectly spaced lights and the moving vehicle.

"Too bad, you missed the view from the outside."

Will looked at her. He paused for a bit, taking in her facial features and the tone of the message. He replied, "yeah, I'm not used to seeing everything so clean." Both of them sat together in peaceful silence and kept looking outside, admiring the repetitive squares of light passing them by. By the time the tunnel ended, everyone was awake and alert. The shuttle made a turn and entered a large empty area, save some ten or twenty men in white clothes. The bodyguard leader disembarked and everyone soon followed. He spoke something to one of the Imperial workers but they were out of (Y/n)'s hearing range. With a swift gesture, he commanded the recruits to follow him.

She followed her new boss through corridors and more corridors which the girl would surely forget how to navigate. He abruptly stopped once they reached the main hall, which had two doors on either side, a set of double doors in front, and two staircases which spun up into the next floor. This place is a maze, how am I not getting lost?  (Y/n) thought. As no help at all for her spiraling thoughts, the tall man began explaining the layout of the palace.

"Finally. I can now officially introduce myself to you. My name is Rigel, and in case you haven't noticed, I'm in charge of operations inside the Palace. I'm your boss, but that does not mean you come talk to me if you have a problem. I trust you can figure it out accordingly." His gaze bore into us as he went on. "Accounting for all five domes, the palace has over 150 floors, most of which you do not have access to. Each one of you will receive an ID card, which you will use to enter restricted areas. Since there are four of you here and another six on my close team, you will work in pairs to do rounds and guard specific areas. Aside from you lot, there are over 1000 other soldiers protecting this palace, so do not think you are important here. Just because you were chosen does not mean you are not replaceable. You will now be taken to your rooms. It is your job to be on duty tomorrow."

Rigel left shortly after the announcements. One of the people that had accompanied them there started guiding the group to a more residential area. (Y/n) noted that she didn't remember seeing this man before; he blended into the environment. Maybe this was a quality she would have to adhere. Seems easy enough, she figured. From what it seemed, she would be only inside the building, which probably meant there was no risk - and therefore not a lot of work.

Once they arrived, the man pointed to four different doors. The first ones were Max's and Daniel's, and they promptly went in once dismissed. A couple of meters away, the next two doors. The man - a tour guide of sorts - offered some final support and left.

Opening the door, the girl was met with a bed and a dresser. On one of the walls was a large screen displaying a weekly schedule and a map. Her ID, as expected, was placed on the dresser's surface. She closed the door behind her and noticed another door which led to a bathroom. The room was large, larger than the one she had in the cabin.

The cabin. Robin. Her first friend in who knows how long.

It was hard for (Y/n) to wrap her head around the fact that only a couple of hours ago she was still in the compound talking to Eric. And, only some days ago, she had people she could call friends. Not anymore, she thought of Chris bitterly. Maybe he had already been acting strange and she didn't realize, but he was just so harsh when she left. Maybe it was because of Robin... no, but that doesn't give him the right! I was hurting too! They knew eachother for longer but she was also my frie-

"ATTENTION, lights out in 10 minutes." A mechanical voice announced. Upon further inspection, (Y/n) noted there was a central speaker on a corner of the room. Beside it, a camera. It was surely uncomfortable but she understood it was a security measure. Hopefully the bathroom didn't have anything, but she promised herself she would check in the morning.

For the rest of the night, the girl laid in bed, thinking about what her life was like. Had she been given a million tries, she could've never guessed this is where she would end up. Great job, a stable foreseeable future, no more financial worries like before and no intense training. A life free of worries. But at what cost, if she felt alone? Hopefully the other boys on her team would serve as good friends, because what happened with the last few was not ideal.

Hi, thanks for reading this chapter. I wanted to do two things.

First, thank you all for 5k reads. I'm trying to pump out chapters a lot quicker than I was before, so please bombard me with messages so I feel bad and write lol

Second, I will be a shameless beggar and advertise myself. I can do that because it's my page! Okay!! So. I know how to make book covers, social media content, and school posters. As a broke college student, I will be opening commissions for that (not too expensive of course, we can discuss prices). If you or anyone you know needs something like that, please shoot me a message! It will help me out in small but significant ways. I'm saving up for a nice winter coat!
