At that, (Y/n) was left alone, waiting for Captain Hall to catch up, wondering what he could possibly want with her.

The captain approached her with a delicate smile. It was interesting, almost misplaced. For the little time she had been with him, (Y/n) already realized that his posture was usually stern, so the small and shy smile on his face was hard to read.

"Hi" she started, tired of the awkward staring as he still went up to her.

"Good evening (Y/n), how was your first day of training?"

The question hit her unexpectedly. Of course, there was nothing else he would ask her, but it still took (Y/n) a moment to figure out how she would answer.

"Uhm, it was good. Very tiring, but rewarding, I guess, sir- uhm- Captain, I-"

"Eric." He interrupted, now grinning. "Well, it's getting late, I believe you should go back inside. Get some rest for tomorrow."

"Oh, yes. I will. Thank you Eric. I'll see you tomorrow."

(Y/n) closed the door behind her and watched the captain leave through the window. The black night cast a shadow onto his face that made his dark brown eyes seem even darker and more menacing.

Why did he want to know how my day went? It's not like that would change anything. If I said my day was terrible and I hated it here, there's nothing he could really do about it.

(Y/n)'s thoughts halted as she passed by Robin, who was looking at something with her ReadingPad, and waved her a good night.

Maybe he was being polite. I wonder if he has to ask this to all recruits every single time. With these and a thousand more conjectures in her mind, (Y/n) fell asleep.

The next few days merged into each other. During the little free time she had, (Y/n) roamed around the area and ended up discovering a building not too far from the cafeteria. Although the exterior was brand new, the interior was uniquely decorated with wood. On the library floors, in book shelves and on the tables, various shades and types of wood were seen.

(Y/n) rarely found anyone at the library. When she mentioned it to Robin, though, she told her that it was a place she used to frequent a lot but stopped since she hadn't found anything interesting. As usual, there was an air of mystery around Robin's motives and past. (Y/n) would not force her to open up though; it could be nothing.

The recruit was very drawn to the library and often found herself roaming the shelves, simply admiring the books. On one particular visit, (Y/n) was at the very back of the room trying to find something that would entertain her. Among the thousands of books, newspapers, magazines and old notes, a red notebook lied in between two thick novels at the lowest level of the shelf. It almost seemed as though it was meant to be hidden.

Taking it out from its hideaway, the girl had the chance to better inspect it. The notebook was small, much smaller than any other she had seen before. A clasp allowed the book to be tightly secured. (Y/n) took the notebook in her arms and kept looking around. She considered looking for a novel, but brushed the thought off since she had her ReadingPad in her room.

Another book, this one much thicker, also stood out. It had a purple hardcover with gold lettering. At first, (Y/n) had trouble reading it, but upon further inspection she realized that they were letters similar to what she was used with. The round letters in fancy font were hard to crack at first, but (Y/n) made the words out to be 'The Rebirth of a Federation'.

The female sat down on a nearby table and put her books down. Thinking of where to start, she settled for the majestic purple. The first couple of chapters described a prosperous civilization who was persecuted by their enemies. Their allies, once strong nations, all perished to the betraying enemy. All that was left for the lone civilization was to defend itself. Although outnumbered, they managed to win the war, and so the population was reborn. This conceded the title of the Reborn Federation.

'Reborn Federation', that rings a bell. (Y/n) wondered to herself. She kept on reading.

The tale of the Reborn Federation continued. Cities were built up once again and a powerful leader was elected from the bravest and strongest of men. The same family ruled for the coming decades, up until this day - or at least the date of making the book.

(Y/n) felt like she had taken all the important information so she decided to close the book. Admittedly, she was also bored. Her mind kept wandering off to the strange yet familiar name and story. I might have heard this somewhere before... she wondered. Suddenly, something clicked in her mind: the story was about her own nation!

Weird, why would they call it the 'Reborn Federation' if we are an Empire?  Also, who wrote this?  Although they were relevant questions, (Y/n) hadn't quite realized that yet so she brushed them off as she pressed on. Well, this book is probably really old anyway, it might be really outdated.

Before her thoughts could wander off too far and uncover hidden secrets, (Y/n)'s reading session was interrupted by a sound coming from the library entrance.

This is a reaaaaally content heavy chapter, so sorry about that! Personally, I get it if you think it was boring. I'm still figuring out pacing and how much background I should introduce at a time. I'll try to make more dialogue and action next time, but I have to start building the universe somehow.

Thank you for bearing with me, I hope I don't lose too many people in this chapter!
