Anticipation

(Y/n) couldn't figure out in what world anyone would think she'd be a good candidate to become the Emperor's bodyguard, but still, here she was, next to the three other men whose names were called. While everyone else was leaving the training area, she took the time to look around for a specific person. However, Chris was nowhere around the area. (Y/n) hadn't seen him for some time now, and she wanted to say goodbye before she had to leave for this new job. The girl made a mental note to search for him later.

At this point, mostly everyone was gone except for the new recruits, the existing team of Imperial bodyguards, and the leaders of the soldiery - General Ota, who appeared seemingly out of nowhere, Captain Eric, and Dr Carr. The scene felt very intimidating, though the air wasn't tense or stiff. Once everyone that was inconsequential to this mission was long gone and the small group had more privacy, the tall man started speaking.

"So, you were chosen. I have very high expectations for each of you, we are all couting on your abilities to protect our Emperor. I will be your mentor and leader. That said, I do not intend on becoming your friend. We leave for the Imperial Palace tonight, so meet me here at exactly 2200. Once we arrive, you will be given more specific intructions, but just a head's up: do not disrespect or betray the Emperor in any way, even in private. He will know. You're dismissed."

With this short and sweet speech, he set off to an unknown direction, probably to finalize preparations for the departure. (Y/n) looked at the other individuals. It seemed like her indignation and confusion was shared. No one spoke a word though, the heavy silence communicated enough. Since no further instructions were given, the group disbanded, and (Y/n) walked slowly to her room.

(Y/n) was done packing her limited items into a duffle bag when she heard a knock. Captain Eric was at the door, and once he saw her inside he gently walked in. The doors were supposed to be locked from the inside, but this thought didn't occur to (Y/n). It wasn't like Eric was an intruder.

"Hey" he said, closing the door "how are you?".

"It's a lot to process at the same time. I feel... lost, honestly." In the span of a couple of days, the girl's life had flipped on its head. This was probably why she felt so compelled to talk to him. There was no one left. "Well, I don't even know how I got into this thing."

Eric responded with a sheepish grin and scratched his head. "Well, let's say I might've played a part in this. I thought it would do you some good to leave after all of the, you know..." There was a moment of silence as the girl took in what he said. The Captain interpreted this as a sign of disapproval and tried to fix it with a lighthearted joke. "And you're also not that bad of a soldier, working in the Palace is a big deal."

The response he received was surprising but by no means unwelcome. Eric was glad (Y/n) couldn't see his face as she hugged his midsection tightly. He heard a low 'thank you', muffled by the friction between lips and fabric. They stayed like this for only a short time, as the Captain quickly excused himself to attend to 'other business'.

(Y/n) heart faltered, but she picked her things up, took a last look around the room and shut the door, hoping this new chapter in her life would be better than the previous.

She wouldn't have the time to dine. Her anxiety was eating her up from the inside anyway, so whatever food came in would inevitably come out in an unpleasant way.

Oddly enough, this departure weighed heavily on her heart. When she left her 'home' to become a soldier, sadness never reached her. It was only a geographical change. Now, however, although she hadn't lived in the compound for long, (Y/n) felt like she was leaving a whole lifetime behind.

Her last order of business was to find Chris. As people populated the cafeteria tables, it was becoming increasingly harder to identify the brown-faced boy amid the crowd. He wasn't at his usual table, where Robin and (Y/n) sat too.

When she was about to give up, (Y/n)'s eyes caught his familiar face. She ran up to him, eager to have one last goodbye. There was so much she could tell him, so much she should tell him. He needed to know what happened before Robin--

"Um... hi (Y/n)."

She looked down at him. He was sitting down with some people she hadn't seen before. Chris seemed uncomfortable once she arrived, but the girl didn't immediately realize this. She started, almost frantic:

"Chris, I looked for you all day! Listen, I'm leaving tonight, but there's a lot you need to know. Look---"

"Oh yeah, I saw they called your name. Good luck I guess. I'm kinda busy right now, but have a nice trip."

What?

Was she mistaken? Or maybe overreacting? Did she make a friend without seeing his true colors? Had she expected too much? Chris, the usually warm and happy man, was now cold and rude. He barely bat an eye at her. (Y/n) walked away slowly, shoked and saddened.

Why would he not want to talk to her? Was he jealous? No, he would never get jealous of her. Chris was too kind. Was he upset about Robin? Of course, they were best friends. But would that be it?

(Y/n) eventually found herself in the same place she'd had a meeting earlier that day. Everyone seemed to be waiting. At first, the girl became anxious thinking they were all waiting for her, but her worries died down once she arrived and no one moved. Everyone was there: the old bodyguards, the new recruits, the tall man with his demanding sura, snd even General Ota. They were mostly calm, some even stoic. The facade was only broken on the General's behalf once she saw Dr Carr approaching them with a trolley-looking vehicle.

The man arrived and retrieved a large box from the trolley. It was made out off some dark metal. It looked polished but heavy. Once the leaders nodded to approve it, the box was loaded into the shuttle. (Y/n) followed the others inside.

The ride would be long, and although she fought the exhaustion, the girl couldn't resist closing her eyes. Little did she know, this would be her last night with peaceful sleep. In her mind, she was prepared for this new stage of her life and career. But as it seemed to be with (Y/n), she was wrong about what to anticipate.
