Rigel straightened his back and took a deep breath in. He wasn't one to get nervous, but being called by the Emperor with such short notice never meant good news. He knocked twice on the door before allowing himself in.
The man was hard to find in the dark room, but Rigel's trained eye could pick him out next to the window. The Emperor quietly observed the outside with his arms behind his back. Seconds passed, the air of the room thick. The Emperor broke the silence with a reprimand.
"You know why you're here Rigel." He turned around, burning the subordinate's soul with icy eyes. Rigel tried to ignore the sweat building up on his hands, knowing that his discomfort was more than obvious. He cleared his throat and quickly apologized.
"I'm sorry Your Greatness. The staff were all instructed to avoid your rooms, but I will reinforce training and punish those who disobey you. I thought --"
"Your job is very simple Rigel," the powerful man spoke, "that girl was standing right outside the door. How long was she there? What did she hear? Do you understand what could happen?"
Rigel's head hung low. He knew that if she had heard anything from that confidential meeting, it would surely mean trouble for the Empire. Worse, it would mean trouble for him. The man cursed at himself for not knowing just how much the girl knew. He was used to being informed of everything going on in the palace.
The Emperor's expression was stoic, but his voice was angry."You're dismissed for now. Bring me that bodyguard so I can interrogate her myself."
With those final words, the tall man nodded and left the room, embarassed and upset at his mistake. Little did he know, the Emperor wasn't that angry at him for letting the bodyguards out of his watch. He was more frustrated about this girl who hadn't left his mind ever since he saw her.
