This past week was spent traveling back and forth to New York. Raubi was really pushing the lawsuit, so I hired a lawyer, who set up a greeting date for the both of us to meet. Here I was, thirty minutes late, speeding down the highway, to meet at this café across town. Other than one phone call, I hadn't heard much from my lawyer. This was our first time meeting, and I was sure my tardiness would make a horrible first impression.
Adjusting my dress, I entered the small building and eyed around, before noticing a man checking his watch. By the business suit and brief case, I figured he was the person I needed to see. I headed toward the table, extending my hand. "Hi, are you Christopher Stanford?"
He rose from the seat with a changing facial expression. "Kaidyn Smith?"
After taking in his features, it finally resonated.
"Chris?! I haven't seen you since high school. You're a lawyer now?""This is my second year."
"That's great!" We hugged each other briefly, before he stepped back looking me over.
"You're still beautiful."
"I would hope so, I'm only twenty-six."
He laughed before pulling my seat away from the table, so that I could sit down."I never thought you would become a lawyer."
"Ah, come on. I remember helping you on tests in high school."
"Tests? Maybe one or two, Chris. Don't flatter yourself."
While he laughed, I noticed the wedding band on his ring finger. "You're married?"
"Yeah, four years now." He replied, twisting the ring around his finger and staring at me.
"Any kids?"
"A girl and a boy, two and three. What about you? I saw that you were a physical therapist, when I reviewed the case. How's that going?"
"Great! It's perfect!" I lied. I couldn't tell him that I was fired. Here he was, with the perfect life, while my own was in shambles. "I don't have any children, just focusing on my career at the moment."
"Damn, Kaidyn. I can't remember why we lost touch."
"Oh, you can't? I think it was sophomore year, when you lied about doing me..."
He slapped the table excitedly. "Oh yeah, I remember! That's when me and the guy fought!"
"You call that a fight? It looked like more of an asswhoopin' to me."
"Oh, you got jokes?"
I shrugged my shoulders, while trying to hold back the laughter. "I call it like I see it."
"I guess I did get my ass kicked, but I deserved it. I want to apologize about that. I was young and immature." He look in his eyes read sincerity, as he waited for my response.
"It's fine, Chris. No harm done."
We talked about college, and our careers. Chris told me so much about his family, that I felt like I practically knew them. His children were adorable, and his wife was beautiful. Pretty soon, the place was closing and we were still there.
"We didn't get any work done." I laughed, stirring my straw around in the overly flat soda.
"You're right. I'm sure we will next time."
"Hopefully, Chris."
"Are you single, or..."
"No, I'm actually still with the guy that beat you up."
