Leila's POV
"Ok but I don't see why that's such an issue" Laura said, then took a sip out of her drink
I rolled my eyes and glanced around the bar from our spot at the table.
"I mean it has to be kinda flattering for a man to give you attention right?" She continued to question, raising her brow at me.
I snorted "Yeah, if it wasn't someone that's slept with the entirety of the world and has terrible taste in women"
It was Laura's turn to snort "As if you're not a poster girl for toxic"
I raised my palm to my chest in mock offense.
We both burst out laughing at the same time.
Laura was a childhood friend that was one of the people I would trust with my life.
There were few people in my small circle and that's the way I liked to keep it, I had been betrayed by people that I was meant to be protected by.
The downside to someone knowing me for so long meant that she also knew me inside and out.
To say I was toxic was an understatement, but I've never been one to deny it.
I had tried to break the trait for years but it was a defense mechanism, so now it was basically had wired.
"I'm sure they will be accommodating regardless, Monica is like family to them" Laura said, breaking through my thoughts with a shrug.
"How do you even know that?"
"I know Paul, not only because obviously, our jobs have us linked," She said nonchalantly "Remember when Travis interned out of college for a record label? Well it was Shady Records here in Detroit"
"I didn't even realize"
"If you weren't busy ruining men's lives you would probably know" She said with a chuckle "Just do your job, be respectful, don't get all volatile man-hater on him, get in and out and you won't have any more run-ins"
"I'm not volatile"
"A volcano on the verge of eruption is less volatile then you, who are you trying to kid?"
"Now" I snorted and picked up my drink, and held it up "Snide remarks aside, let's do what we came here for, congratulations on your promotion"
We clinked classes as Laura beamed in her state of glory.
"I'm so excited for this new chapter!" She grinned.
"Don't forget us, the little people, when you're famous"
"Please, I report on the Detroit local entertainment and the social scene still, it's hardly changing the world" She turned at me.
"How would I know whose who without your news reports over the years though?"
She chuckled "Thank you for your support"
"Always" I smirked "I may have to start charging for all these pep talks though"
------
I sat on the sofa in the reception area of Effigy reading over the notes while I waited for Monica to meet with her and give her an update.
Marc and I have been on her husband's case for a few days already.
After preliminary results, after reviewing his financials, his whereabouts, etc.
We can't find anything about an affair.
Either that or he's very good at covering his tracks.
Nothing is suspicious is found after our first analysis but after watching him, observing him, Marc and I both agreed that there is definitely something suspicious about Monica's husband.
Something's got to give.
"You waitin' to come through?"
I look up and see Marshall staring down at me, facial expression deadpanned.
"I've got a meeting with Monica"
"Well she's gonna be late, so you can either sit out here with your thumb up your ass or I can take you to her office to wait"
I frown at him as he gestures his hands impatiently towards the door through to the studio.
I stand and he huffs, turns and then walks towards the door, swiping his id card and opening the door, letting my walkthrough.
"Man child" I whisper to myself as I roll my eyes and follow him as he stomps up the corridor.
"In here" He mutters before his eyes land back on me glaring "Don't touch shit, and stay here"
"Yes sir," I say as I salute him sarcastically, he replies with a snort before turning and storming into another office close by and slamming the door.
I laugh to myself quietly at his poor attitude and make myself comfortable on the chair across from the desk, placing my files in front of me.
I Pull out my phone and scroll through some emails and before I know it I'm getting startled by someone frantically entering the office.
"So sorry I'm late!" Monica announced "I was running errands for Marshall and I got stuck in traffic"
I smile at her "It's fine, your boss showed his great hospitality and let me wait in here... I must say, he's got the most exquisite social skills"
"Ah yes, that's our Marshall... He's quite the character, but a heart of gold I assure you" She chuckled "I hope he wasn't too rude, he's been in a mood lately"
"I didn't notice, I thought that must have been part of his charm, I can see why he's so popular with the ladies"
"I apologize on his behalf" She said with another chuckle "Now, you said you had an update?"
"Yes!" I said pulling the folder out and opening it to the surveillance page I wanted "We have been monitoring him for a few days now and so far he's come up clean, however after some discussion Marc and I are still suspicious because it's almost too clean, if you get what I'm saying"
"So what's the next step?"
"I try to seduce him, sometimes these cheaters have their tracks so well covered on paper the only way to catch them is in the act, that's where we can document it"
Monica nods and bites her lip "What do you mean by seduce?"
"Don't worry, it's purely non-sexual, most of the time a hotel room is involved but it's to simply gain the knowledge of their motives and if they plan on proceeding with an outside relationship" I said, sliding her the dossier so she could read what he was up to so far "Then we give the documented information about him to your lawyer and then he uses it in the divorce"
She sighed and gave me a week smile, eyes tired, black rings from sleepless nights up worrying.
"We will catch him, you have my word"
"I hope so," She said the paperwork back to me "But I'm scared"
"Don't be scared, you're going to get everything"
Men.
I honestly despised them and their dicks.
