Leila POV
The loud ringing at my bedside made me jolt upright in bed.
"Who the fuck is calling you at 4 am" Marshall's groggy voice came from behind me as he sat up next to me and flipped the lamp on.
I reached for my phone, caller ID was unknown.
"Hello?"
"Is this Leila Tate?"
"Yes, that is her, can I ask who's calling?"
"Miss Tate, my name is Maria, I'm a trauma nurse at Henry Ford Hospital, we have an Alec Jackson here as a patient, we have you down as an emergency contacted and next of kin, Ma'am, he's been shot and I need you to come in-"
I went momentarily deaf as it felt like my world started to fall apart all over again as my phone dropped into my lap.
"Leila? what's wrong?" Marshall's husky voice broke through my fogged mind, I looked up at him, the sickness in my chest rising and my heartbeat through my ears.
"It's Alec" I said, forcing out the last words before the tears fell "He's been shot"
Marshall snatched up the phone and started speaking, this time his words were coming incoherent mumbles as I cried, I couldn't hear him, as all I could feel was the familiar pain I had felt before.
It was the same way it went down with Tommy.
The phone call.
"Leila" Marshall said again, this time somehow standing in front of my side of the bed pulling his boxers and joggers on "Baby you gotta get dressed, we gotta get you to the hospital to see him"
My mouth was dry and I kept swallowing the bile that was rising up my throat, pictures of Tommys still body lying on the hospital bed, covered in wires and tubes, the echo of his time of flat line, flashing through my mind.
Marshalls gentle but urgent touch of him helping me dress in a daze pulled me into focus again.
"I-" I said as I felt Marshall give up and pick me up bridal style, walking out of my house and placing me into his SUV "I can't lose him too- I don't want to see him like that"
"He's still alive baby, everything's going to be okay" Marshall cooed quietly, voice low, calming and filling my senses with an almost authoritative tone to it "The nurse said the bullet missed any main arteries, they have removed it and he's recovering, you're not losing him, I promise"
I look up at him, he's starting, his expression strange, I put it down to the fact that I am inches from falling apart that I am not thinking straight.
The relief I feel from the heaviness that was sitting on my shoulders lifts and the clouds begin to clear.
I realise we were close to the hospital already, in my shocked state I hadn't even realised how fast we must have been travelling.

Marshall POV
We waited for the nurse to come back and take us to where they had Alec recovering.
I made a mental note to warn Paul that there would most likely be a speeding fine or a few coming in, because I was in such a rush to get Leila to the hospital, I'm pretty sure I was driving so fast I broke the sound barrier.
I look at Leila who is chewing on her usually manicured fingers nervously.
My heart sank when she said Alec had been shot, even more so when I could physically see her falling apart in front of me, All I could see was her reliving the death of Tommy in her head.
She instantly shut down.
It was terrifying to think a woman as confident and independent as Leila fell apart like delicate shards of sugar glass.
I couldn't help but relive the day I got called about Proofs death, but as if I was standing on the outside looking in.
It was such a relief when the nurse continued to explain to me that he was stable and in recovery.
"Miss Tate?" A short blonde nurse appeared, standing in front of us with a clipboard, as Leila nodded frantically "This way, please"
We both got up and followed the nurse down the cold hallway of the hospital, door after door passing by, the smell of disinfectant hitting my senses as we finally come to a room, I stopped, allowing Leila to go in by herself "Ill wait here till you're ready to-"
"Please" Leila said in barely a whisper "I need you"
I nodded and followed her in, the sounds of machines buzzing and beeping, Alec's large body come into view.
His fearsome statute looking somewhat placid as he had in the hospital bed, I look to Leila who still looks like she's about to break into a sob, rushing to his side and leaning over him, bracing him into a hug.
I watch as his eyes flutter open and he grunts at her in pain "Lala, fuck, watch out"
"What the fuck is wrong with you asshole, the fuck were you thinkin'?" Leila whisper yelled, snapping back, wiping her tears then crossing her arms.
I stand back listening to their back and forth, rolling my eyes at their bickering but at the same time relieved that she's no longer on edge.
Leila pulls her phone out of her pocket "I have to call Monica"
"Oh Nah, don't do that, I'll just tell her when I get home that I had a little accident, I don't wanna worry her ya know? She doesn't need to know the full extent of the damage"
"She's kinda gonna noticed a big ass gunshot wound man" I say awkwardly.
I mean I was once shot walking to Kim's house when I was a teenager, ain't no hiding those bullet holes.
Alec sighed and held out his hand "Give me the damn phone woman, I'll do it myself, should get your ass kicked out, harassing a man and shit"
Leila glared at him before turning to me as he made the call, a relieved smile spreading across her face.
I recognized they both had a defence mechanism in situations like this, in life in general, they hid everything with humour, Alec did it to protect Leila and she did it so he didn't worry about her.
But I know damn well they were both the opposite inside.
"So he really ain't going down easy your cousin huh?" I say with a smirk, trying to lighten the mood even more by making a joke, a habit I found I had picked up around her.
"Thank you, for being the voice of reason I needed, I just went straight back to that dark place, I'm sorry you pretty much had to make me function"
"You don't have to thank me, or Apologise, I've been in that position before, it's a phone call no one wants to receive"
She steps forward, wrapping her arms around me, hugging me tightly.
At first I was shocked at her sudden uncharacteristic public display of affection, especially in front of her cousin, but then I brush the initial surprise aside, and wrap my arms around her, kissing her on the forehead.
