From the second Thomas stabbed the needle in him, his eyesight went dark, succumbing to the pain from the sting. It was dark for what seemed like an eternity until a flash of white and blue took over his vision. A streak of white, a streak of blue, until a room came into focus. Looking around, there were kids circled around a large table, their eyes boring into clear screens with flashing images and words in bright blue. There was a tall woman with strawberry blonde hair neatly pulled back into a sleek low ponytail. She laced through the kids, sometimes crouching down to whisper something into their ear. Thomas didn't see their faces, but he could tell they looked like they were in a trance. Then suddenly, he was sitting in one in the chairs.
Thomas glanced around, his eyes darting around at the kids and their screens. One of the screens showed a picture of a boy around his age with a square jaw in a clearing, holding up some boxes. An image of a brain scan was next to the picture of the boy, some parts of it lighting up in a faint red to show activity. Slowly, Thomas peeled his eyes off the screen and saw the girl sitting in front of him: Teresa. Like Thomas, she was also monitoring someone's brain on her screen. Before he could form words, there was an ice-cold breath on Thomas's neck. He stiffened as the perfectly manicured hand rested on his shoulder.
"Excellent Thomas. Come with me please."
He felt his body rise from the chair as if he were in a trance and followed the woman in white to another room. Inside, rows of capsules lined against the wall. At first, the capsules seemed like they were just filled with water, but when Thomas stepped closer, a face popped up, screaming and struggling while in the capsule. The boy pounded against the steel panel of the capsule, begging for Thomas to let him out, but he just watched, unable to move or do anything.
In the capsule next to his, a girl was also thrashing in the water. Her red hair floated in the water violently, swaying as much as her arms. The big bubbles from her nose and mouth arose to the surface as she screamed. Thomas stepped closer to the capsule, watching the girl.
Although Thomas had been in the room a dozen times, it felt different that time. While taking in the sight before him, he felt remorse and pity. He did these to all these kids, who were probably his friends at one point; he couldn't remember if they all had been. Wait, why couldn't he remember? There was a nagging feeling in the back of his mind as he tried to recall on why he would ever do this in the first place.
"Thomas, it's time," the woman spoke softly in a hushed tone. Thomas turned around and the blonde woman plunged a needle into the side of his neck.
WICKED wasn't good.
