Beginnings
Mako rushed down the streets of Republic City, people being pushed by him as he was in a hurry. The girl in his arms lost consciousness moments ago as he was trying to get her back. He went into the police station, his coworkers furrowing their brows at his frantic expressions and he kicked the doors of Chief Beifong's office open and the Chief grumbled.
"What in the world gives you the right to barge in here?!" Beifong yelled and Mako panted as he placed Dawn carefully on her desk.
"It's Dawn. You're the only person I could think of, Tenzin is gone to the air temples, Korra went to the Fire Nation, please..." Mako panted out, his breath labored as he held tightly onto Dawn's cool hand.
"Help her." He finished, his eyes holding back tears as Beifong looked at the girl with her mouth slightly open.
Dawn was covered in dark, pulsating veins that were spreading slowly up her body. They reached all the way to her neck, crawling up to her face as blood was dripping from her nose. "I-I don't..." Beifong muttered and sighed. "Someone get me Katara. Now!" She yelled, and her officers rushed out, Dawn groaning when Beifong went to pull her shirt to see exactly where the veins started. Mako and her gasped at the dark hole that was present in the center of her chest.
"How long was she like this?" Beifong asked and Mako shakes his head.
"I-I don't- -"
"It got larger this afternoon. She was at the factory when I noticed it, but I thought it was nothing." Asami said, walking in and frowning. "It just looked like a small speck of dirt when I glanced..." she breathed out and Mako glared at her.
"Dirt?" He asked and laughed sarcastically while rubbing his face. "You thought this was dirt! She looks as if she's about to die!" Mako yelled and Beifong snapped her fingers.
"Enough! This isn't good for Dawn, so both of you just leave." She said and Mako tried to say something, but Beifong glared at him. "That's a command." She said calmly and Mako sighed, walking out as Asami frowned as well, walking with him.
Dawn opened her eyes slowly and Beifong carefully placed a blanket over her. "Raava." She breathed out and Beifong shushed her.
"Dawn, you need to just relax. We are going to get Katara here." She told her as Dawn looked behind Beifong, the girl with braids and two colored eyes staring back.
"It's time, Dawn." She said again, and Dawn closed her eyes as she was pulled into a dream.
She gasped, opening her eyes to see the area was bright, bison flying over her head as she furrowed her eyebrows. A monk walked over to her, smiling. "Dawn, what a pleasure it is to finally meet you." He said, smiling and Dawn blinked slowly.
"Where am I?" She asked and he sighed.
"You are at the Southern Air Temple. The same one Avatar Aang and Protector Persephone grew up." The monk said and Dawn frowned even more, looking down at her body and back at the man.
"And why am I here?" She questioned, crossing her arms and the man smiling.
"You are here so the line of the Protector can stop. We never intended on there being more than one, but I guess Raava had other plans." He said and Dawn laughed, looking away and biting her lip.
"Right, I'm just supposed to be let off. What crazy dream am I making up right now." She laughed and looked to the man. "I know my grandmother told me stories of the monks, but this is another level. There's no way that I'm actually talking to a real monk." She said and the man kept his smile.
"You are, because your grandmother didn't mention what we looked like and our names. My name is Gyatso, and I was Persephone's and Aang's mentor." He told her while the girl stopped smiling and frowned.

Dawn was pacing on the paths of the Southern Air Temple, looking around to see it was only Gyatso and the animals like flying bison and flying lemurs, but she had to punch herself to make sure she wasn't dreaming.
"I'm going to die. I can't die." She whispered and Gyatso just hummed along while he was mixing up a bowl of some colorful batter.
"You sound just like your grandmother. Not wanting to die either, cutting off our sever to Raava, but now it's time for you. Raava shouldn't have connected to you." Gyatso said while Dawn rolled her eyes.
"What exactly is going to happen?" She asked and Gyatso didn't glance from his baking.
"The Avatar had been attacked by a dark spirit, allowing you to be effected as well. That's why you're slowly dying, but I can stop it by cutting off your connection with Raava. There should have never been a second Protector." Gyatso informed the girl, and Dawn frowned.
"But I love being the Protector. I like my life, yes Korra and I might get in a few arguments, but we have worked through all of them." She told the old man, watching as he placed the cake in front of her and puffed it up with airbending.
"This has nothing to do with Korra, it's you. You should have never existed." He told her and she scoffed.
"Yes, I should. If Raava created me like you said, then she had plans for me." She said and Gyatso stopped while thinking about it.
"Then why give you airbending? You didn't need it- -"
"I did need it! The Avatar was in danger! You weren't there to see what was happening, so I deserve to live." She yelled at him, angered. He thought about it and looked at her.
"What the monks did for the hundred year war is not okay. This needs to end for balance." He told her and she bit her lip, looking at the man.
"It's too late for that. And with the Protector, there is balance. The Avatar lives and help bring peace to the world. What must I do?" She asked him while he sighed and smiled.
"You must sever your connection to Raava. You won't understand how yet, but the time will come. And it won't be easy, but if you don't the consequences will be worse than what we did to your grandmother. You will die." He warned her, the girl frowning, but nods her head.
"I promise, I will." She whispered and then the area around her darkened, causing her to feel immense pain as she opened her eyes to see her body in water, and a hand holding her own.
"Mako?" She asked and he sighed in relief.
"She's waking up." He said while Katara sighed and stopped healing her for just a moment.
"Dawn, do you remember what happened?" She asked and Dawn looked around and smiled.
"I let myself get hurt." She breathed out as Katara smiled.
"And I had to come heal you. One more session and I think you should be okay, along with Korra." She said while Mako sighed in relief.
"Thank you." He whispered to Katara then glancing at Dawn. "And you are going to be on immediate bed rest." He told her while she groaned.
"I hate being babysat." She muttered.
