A Birthday Passing

A teenage girl was sat down by the edge of a cliff of the South Pole, staring out at the ocean as the sun was bright and orange streams of color were shining down towards the blue sea. Her black ebony hair was shining in the sunlight, bright golden eyes that matched her grandfather, and clear pale skin over her face. Her pale, pink lips were in a thin line as she kept her eyes over the sun rise. She held her legs to her chest, another memory escaping her brain as she sighed and heard feet crunching in the snow.

Dawn looked to her right, a girl who was taller than her, muscular, and a stride that was long as she was trying to quickly get to her. Her dark brown hair was in a ponytail with some hair pulled out to the sides, her eyes a piercing blue for her Water Tribe heritage, and her skin tanned perfectly.

She sat down next to her, Dawn looking back at the sunrise. "Hi, Korra." She breathed out.

Korra, Dawn's best friend and the Avatar, wrapped her arm around Dawn's shoulders and she leaned into her touch. "You've been sad ever since our birthday yesterday. What's wrong?" She asked, and Dawn sighed even more.

"I'm eighteen and I don't have my scar or even my second eye color." She muttered, and now Korra understood.

Dawn knew at a young age that she might not have a soulmate. Her mother told her that if she never got an eye color or a scar by the age of eighteen then she probably never was going to have a soulmate.

Her eighteenth birthday was a pain to have. The girl now just had a dull look to her golden eyes and she looked to Korra sadly. "It's going to be okay, Dawn. You don't need a soulmate to be happy." She said and Dawn rolled her eyes.

"Korra, you have a soulmate. I just thought that maybe the granddaughter of a sun warrior would have a soulmate. But I don't." She breathed out, laying on the snow and letting her hair sprawl around the way it's ground.

She kept her eyes on the lilac and pink sky. Korea laid with her, smiling slightly and looking at the girl. "You're going to be fine, Dawn. You will find someone else who doesn't have a soulmate mark." She said, Dawn taking a deep breath and smiled lightly at her friend.

She grinned, patting Korra's hand. "Did I ever tell you that you're such a good friend?" She asked, Korra laughing and looked back up at the sky.

"You have plenty of times. Now, how about we spare and I can kick your butt?" She asked, getting up while grabbing Dawn's arms and pulling her up with her.

The other girl rolled her golden eyes, she growled lowly and as Korra started running, Dawn held flames in the palms of her hands and smirked. "I think you mean when I will kick your butt!" She yelled, laughing as the two chased each other.

As Dawn was sparring with Korra, the girls were using the same two elements against one another, while Dawn would use water, Korra would use fire and then they would switch. The two tried to see who was always better, and so far, it seemed to be Dawn kicking Korra's butt with her body covered in a suit of water, her eyes glowing it's rare purple as Korra growled and tried to dodge the attack.

"That's no far! You're using your protector spirit." She whined, Dawn just laughing at her friend.

She was helping Korra up, smiling at her friend and she felt eyes on her. She turned to see her grandmother there talking to Katara. The two laughing and Persephone was holding onto Katara's hand, a solemn look over her face.

"What's your grandmother doing here?" Korra asked, the girl shrugging her shoulders.

"Sometimes she comes to make sure I'm not over training. You know how she is, the Monks messed with her brain." She teased, twirling her finger over her temple and the two girls walked over to the older women.

"Korra, it's so good to see you again. And Dawn, whenever you get the chance we need to talk." She said, and Dawn could see something dull in her grandmother's eyes.

She furrowed her eyebrows, looking to Korra as she smiled. "I'll see you at dinner." She told her, the girl nodding her head and the two family members went off.

Dawn could tell something was wrong, the two went off towards a beautiful balcony to see the sun high in the sky and Persephone smiled at her granddaughter and she looked at her. "Dawn, how you've grown into such a great protector for Korra." She grinned, Dawn smiling and feeling her grandmother good her cheek.

"Thank you, grandma. But why are you here? You should be in the Fire Nation with Grandpa Zuko." She said and Persephone frowned slightly.

"I know, but something came up." She said and Persephone gulped down her anxiety. "I've been really sick recently, Dawn. And your grandfather has given the best healers, but nothing seems to be working." She told her granddaughter, and Dawn felt her heart ache.

"You're not going to..." she paused, not wanting to say it.

"No! Don't be silly. I've got a while." Persephone said, Dawn watching as she seemed like she was hiding the truth. "I just wanted to tell you so we could possibly spend more time, just in case I do pass." She said, holding onto the railing and looking out onto the beautiful southern pole sky.

"How could you say that? Even think that? You're not going to die." Dawn stated, holding onto her grandmother's hand. "There's still so many things that you need to teach me. You're the only two element Bender the world knows." She pleaded.

Persephone grinned and rolled her double colored eyes. "Dawn, you don't need me to teach you anything. You have Korra and as long as you two are together, you'll do great things." She smiled, wrinkles holding over her cheeks.

Dawn sighed, knowing she won't get to her grandmother and just hugged her. "I love you, grandma." She whispered, Persephone hugging her back and chuckling.

"I love you, too."
