The hot pan sizzled as Gina made breakfast for her mother and herself at 9:00 am one beautiful fall morning. "Mom! Breakfast is ready!" She called out from the kitchen doorway as she slid the eggs and bacon onto a large serving platter.
Her mother responded with a large grunt as she shuffled out of her bedroom, down the hall and into the kitchen whilst wearing a fluffy, faded bathrobe with matching worn out slippers. Her short brown hair looked knotty. "I can't understand how you can wake up so early, Gina darling. It's Sunday morning for God's sakes!" Groaned her mother while pouring some coffee into a mug.
"I, on the other hand, cannot conceive how you can ingest such a disgustingly bitter concoction, mother!" Rebuked Gina in a false British accent, as she shoved her breakfast in her mouth and wrinkled her nose. Gina could not stand coffee, and she hated it with a passion.
"What's the plan for today?" Questioned Gina in her normal voice, as she wiped her hands on her apron.
"I'm going to the bank later to withdraw some money and I was hoping to go grocery shopping afterwards." Responded Gina's mother and she read the newspaper.
"How about dropping me off at the grocery then you go to the bank, Mom? It'll be a lot faster and we could meet up back here at 3:00 pm." Suggested Gina helpfully.
"Don't you have that library meeting for teens that you love to go to so much?" Asked Gina's mom while sneakily pinching two small strips of bacon between her fingers while Gina removed her apron and started walking towards the doorway.
"Nah, it was rescheduled for next week." Responded Gina nonchalantly as she ran down the hall to her room to drown out her mother's excuses for her to go out and be young.
She ripped a comb through her unruly and short black hair as she put together her outfit in her mind. Maybe she should wear her yellow shirt with the print 'Dance Your Ass Off' on it like from the movie Footloose.
She shook her head and took off her glasses so they wouldn't get caught on her shirt as she was changing. She then decided to wear something else and pulled on a dark blue t-shirt with The Beatles on it. It was one of her favourite shirts because it had the logo and John, George, Paul and Ringo on it too.
Quickly jumping into black jeans and her bright red flats, she went to the family room to grab a snack but as she ran, her foot caught on the maroon rug that decorated the hall and her face collided with the floor. Owwww!
When Gina's mother finally shuffled back from the kitchen to the hallway, Gina still had not gotten up off the ground and was blocking the path.
Placing her hands on her hips, Gina's mom exclaimed teasingly, "I'll be waiting in the car until you're done making out with the floor! It's becoming a habit I see!".
The adolescent girl got up and pouted exaggeratedly. "Mom, it's not my fault the the walls are jerks, chairs bully me and gravity just despises my existence!" Gina whined, while trying to conceal a giggle.
"Nah, you're just extremely clumsy!" Chuckled Gina's mom as she flounced over her daughter's sprawled body and into her bedroom, coffee taking effect. Gina pushed herself up off the floor and went back to the kitchen to eat. After stuffing her face with eggs and bacon, the teenager washed her plate. Running back into the hall, she saw her mother once more and was astonished at how quickly her mother got ready. Florence Medley, aka Gina's mom, always managed to look graceful even though a few minutes ago, she looked like she crawled out of a sink drain with her faded bunny slippers.
After locking the house door and tripping again towards the tiny car that they owned, the made their way towards the supermarket.
