Rush Hour

The next day as Al and Gina were walking down a small street of shops to school, Gina explained everything to Al. To say Albert was annoyed would be an understatement. Albert was full on furious at Gina.

"I said I was sorry!" Huffed Gina exasperatedly as Al ignored her. "Do you know how terrifying it is being chased by your arch-nemesis at the supermarket? It's pretty damn terrifying so stop being so..." Gina paused and giggled quietly as she continued what she was going to say, "...pissed off at me."

She guaffled at her own horrible pun and Albert couldn't help but chuckle and forgive her. They were best friends since the 1st grade and he couldn't stay mad at his dramatic and bubbly best friend.

"Well, I guess that when I have grandkids I could tell them about the time I peed on the most popular boy at school." Al grinned at Gina and she laughed. "I guess it was pretty lucky that I ran away before Chris Blake got a good look at my face!" The happiness died down when a sudden shadow loomed over the two friends. A sudden chill swept through them.

"Do you know what will happen now that I know who peed on me?" The deep and familiar voice of Christopher Blake swirled menacingly around their ears. They froze, terrified to move. Chris' voice continued to taunt them but that was not what Gina was preoccupied with.

She snuck a glance at Al and they nodded quickly. Before Chris could finish his sentence, the two ran as fast as they could in opposite directions to the school. Because Gina and Albert were neighbours for a long time, they walked to school all the time and back when the two were 11, they discovered numerous shortcuts to places all over town.

Their shortcuts to the high school was either through the woods that you would enter from behind the pharmacy that they were both standing in front of at that moment and through the busy street.

Al chose the woods and Gina took the street and the two ran as if their lives depended on it (it kind of did depend on it at that moment). Horns honked violently as Gina narrowly missed getting hit by a car. Of course, Gina's luck allowed just the worst of things to happen at the most terrible moments. In this case: it was rush hour.

"What the Hell!" Chris' voice trailed after her as she ran to the middle of the road, where there was a good sized, platform of cement where pedestrians could wait as the cars made u-turns. In this case, it was a safe haven for Gina, where she was shielded by the speeding cars that kept going in front of and behind her. "Thank goodness this space is safe!" Puffed my he panicked girl in relief while keeping her feet firmly planted on the slab of pavement.

Chris had gotten closer to Gina and risked the rush of cars just as she had and since Gina didn't expect the boy to be courageous enough to dash through the street, she gasped audibly and felt her heart stop when his arms suddenly wrapped around her waist from behind and his laboured breathing tickled her ears.

"Never. Do. That. Again."

Whispered Chris' raspy voice as his heart pummelled in his chest. He was so close that Gina could feel the rapid ba-thump ba-thump pattern of his heart on her back. He was almost hit by several cars so he had a pretty good excuse but Gina's heartbeat beat erratically for a different reason. It raced, not because of the run between the fast-moving automobiles (she did that normally with Al ever since she was a kid). The reason for her elevated heart rate was because the boy she used to be madly in love with was embracing her.

For a split second, Gina forgot all about her pent up anger, hate and thirst for vengeance, she just wanted to stand there and feel his arms around her, her back pressed gently against his chest. Where had all her hurt gone? Gina wondered and came to her senses. She suddenly stiffened and tore across the other half of the street.

"Wait!" Gina heard Christopher yell as she looked back before reaching the sidewalk. What is that Chris is holding? My backpack? Wondered Gina. Chris yelled something again, but this time Gina couldn't hear what he said, a car was speeding towards her, sun gleaming against the windshield and the horn blaring in her ears.

Before she could react, a heavy force knocked her to the side. Then everything went black.
