The fall season was coming to an end and the winter season was beginning. Unlike the normal soft fall of snow that begins in late November, it came furiously, with gusts of frost and angry gales of wind, but since Al and Gina made up, everything was going smoothly for the both of them. On the other hand, Chris' life hadn't been going smoothly at all. It had been a week since Gina got sick and made up with her best friend, but Christopher Blake had no idea of this event and was getting worried that something could have happened to Gina, since she didn't come to school or go to work. More often than not, he had been catching himself daydreaming about her. What's wrong with me??? Chris wondered, he couldn't deny it though; he was worried about her. Ever since she lashed out at Al that fateful banana suit day, he couldn't get her tear-stained and blotchy red face out of his head. He couldn't seem to forget how she looked so broken, how her voice cracked as she cried. Ever since Chris was a child, he always saw Gina walking around proudly even when things went wrong. 6th grade, she got stung by a bee; she didn't cry. 8th grade, a heavy, unhinged door fell on her foot; no tears. Why was she crying then? Chris pondered.
Ever since that day, Chris had no idea that Albert at Gina had made up; nor did he know that Gina was sick. Throughout the whole week of school, he was worrying about her. Why can't I get her out of my head? What are these feelings? He shook his head, trying to clear away the clear picture of Gina in his mind as he closed his locker. The week really seemed to fly by when he was distracted. Could I be in love?
At this thought, Christopher actually laughed out loud, causing the people at their lockers around him to glance weirdly at him since he wasn't talking to anyone in particular. They began to disperse and go about their business, preparing to go home for the weekend while Christopher continued to clean out his locker. NAHH! With that weirdo? No way could I have feelings for her! But...-
*Tap tap* The well known pressure of the knuckles of a certain girl found its home on Chris' head.
"Heyo! It's me!" Mila cried happily into Christopher's ear. Chris turned his head halfway, but continued to put his gear into his bag while his best friends chattered. "So...I can't hang out todayyyy! It's been forever, but it had been a month for me and Al being together, so I'm going out! I'm really really sorry that I will miss your birthday!"
"Aw that's great! Go out! Forget that I'm officially turning 17 tonight!" Chris replied sarcastically. The pout on Mila's face made it clear that Chris had crossed a line. To lighten the mood, he added; "Mila. My BFFL. I'm kidding! You know I love to hang out with you, but I actually am not feeling that well" he lied to make her feel less guilty, "I just want a quiet night."
"Oh thank you! You're the bestest friend ever Chris!!! I TOTALLY owe you one next year, okay?" Mila gushed, "What I don't understand though, why don't you ever invite anyone to party with you? You have tons of friends, but you chooses to push them away on your birthday of all days?"
"It's nothing, have fun!" Chris shrugged and smiled. "Don't get drunk, layer your clothes because it's getting really cold, don't stay out too late, and make sure to drive safely, no one needs any accidents on those icy roads."
"Got it, mom!" Mila raised her hand to her forehead in a mock salute, "I'd love to stay and chat, but I heard that the traffic is mega crazy so I gotta get running! Happy 17th!" Patting Chris on the head one last time; she dashed away, blonde ponytail bouncing in the breeze.
Sighing tiredly, Chris returned to his task, stuffing his basketball clothes into his bag for the weekend. Yep. I am all set. Reaching down and clasping the long shoulder strap of his bag, he swung it over his shoulder and BAM!
------
"Hello? Hi Florence, oh you have to close up shop late tonight? Yeah, I understand. Yeah, don't worry, I'll take care of it. Gina'll be well taken care of."
Al was worried, but playing it cool as closed Gina's messy locker where he retrieved her textbooks and binder. He speed walked through the halls of the school, desperate to get to his car as he talked on the phone with Gina's mom, assuring her that her daughter wasn't going to fall behind in her studies. "She'll destroy me if she isn't in the top 5 of every class, Florence, I got this. Yes. Okay bye." Al sighed as he hung up the phone, it was always like this whenever Gina missed school. Ever since Gina's father was out of the picture, Florence Medley had always out, working night and day to support the both of them; which left Al to be the one to take care of Gina, but he had a plan.
"Yeah, I can handle this!" Al said aloud to himself as he passed locker by locker, gaining speed as well as panic. "I just need to drop off Gina's junk, go home, shower, find decent clothes, pick up Mila, not get stuck in traffic and make sure we both have an awesome time! Yeah! I can do this!" His voice had gained an edge of hysteria as it got higher and more crazed. "Easy! Yep! I can do this! I CAN DO THIS! I CAN'T DO THIS!!!" He was running now and he was completely freaking out. "OHMIGOD HOW WILL I MANAGE THIS ALL???" He shrieked. Then BAM! He was sprawled on the ground and seeing stars.
"Oh dude! Are you okay???" Chris said, concern oozing from his voice. He dropped his bag and knelt by Al, who was sitting on the ground, a dazed expression on his face. "Sorry man! I didn't see you there!"
It took a moment for Al to respond, but when he did, he was crying. Chris was daunted. "Bro! Man! I didn't hit you that hard, did I? I'm sorry!" Chris helped Albert up brushed off his shirt.
"Chris!!! I'm sorry I peed on you! I didn't mean to!" Albert bawled loudly, earning the two boys a weirded out stare from the custodian who was passing by. Chris was also weirded out, still unused to Al's little outbursts. "Dude...is that why you're crying..? Don't worry, I forgive you. You wouldn't be dating Mila if I didn't forgive you."
"No man! I need a favour!!!" Al said, "I am really really REALLY off schedule so I need you to drop these off at Gina's house!" Al thrusted the schoolwork into Chris' arms and rushed away. "I owe you one!!!" Albert's voice trailed on as he disappeared.
Great. It's my birthday, and I've been ditched and turned into a delivery boy.
Sighing heavily, Chris left the building into the howling snowstorm. Happy birthday to me.
