"She was quiet. There wasn't much she said that wasn't a contribution to the problem at hand. She only talked when something needed to be said, when something important needed to be addressed.

It was kind of like she was there, but she wasn't, at least for the first few days. I kind of understood it, what she was feeling, how... how she was coping. I could even see that she felt something was off, too, yet she never stuck up for me. She never said a word when the others called me crazy or psycho. She just faded out a lot, constantly zoning out in situations that seemed too hard for her to grasp.

No, I don't know why she was there. I don't know if you've noticed, but everyone was there for a reason. We all had... skeletons in our closets or some crap like that, and after a while, you could guess what had happened with the other girls, why they had to take a break from their lives and spend a whole dang summer in Hawaii.

But... not with Raelynn. Do you- okay, I don't know if you have, but have you seen or... I don't know... read "Twilight?" Or do you at least understand the storyline? I know, it's not the Great American Novel or any crap like that, but the main character, Bella... she has this ability to like... cast this shield type thing around her body to protect her from vampires' magic, and it's there even before she becomes a vampire herself. Edward spends, like, the entire series just trying to get into her head, trying to figure out how she felt, since his superpower or whatever was reading minds. He felt like he knew her in a sense, on the outside, but there was always this wall that she had up that he was just hammering and hammering at, but it just wouldn't fall.

That's... that's kind of how it was with Raelynn. It's like she cast this shadow of... protection or something around her, and... and the only person who ever got close enough to actually share that with her was..."

    "Was who, Leah?"

"...was Toni. She was the only one who could ever understand why she did what she did on that island."
