The gentle hum of car tyres racing along the road filled up the silence in the car. Chan was relaxed in his seat, head limp and resting against the window, lids heavy as he slowly tried to stave off his exhaustion. The sun had set hours ago, but you and Chan had only just left Dahomey and her fae village, lingering in the magical place much longer than you had first anticipated you would. With all the branch leaders organised and nobody else you could think of to ask for help, you realised there was nowhere else to go except home.

Considering the time, it would have been best to pull in at a motel and rest for the night, but for some reason you found sleep evading you. Your mind was plagued with plans, ideas and worries, knowing the next couple weeks were going to be filled with chaos that was going to cause irrevocable damage no matter what the outcome proved to be.

"What were you and Dahomey talking about?" You asked Chan softly. It was obvious how tired he was - he was practically asleep in his seat - and you didn't want to keep him awake, but you were filled with burning curiosity. Whilst you were busy playing with the young far children, Dahomey had stricken up a conversation with Chan.

You remembered looking back at Chan every now and again, the usual openness of his expressions giving away the seriousness off the conversation. You were too far away to hear what they were discussing but he was giving Dahomey his unwavering attention, face drooping and quirking at what she was saying. After you'd finished playing with the kids, you'd wanted to ask the two of them what they were talking about, but you felt as if you would be imposing on a private moment, so you held off on asking. Until now, when the curiosity resurged.

Chan opened his eyes wider, but he didn't move. "We talked about her son," Chan replied, his voice raspy with exhaustion. Your eyebrows perked with surprise. You were not at all aware that Dahomey had children. "He was human." This came as even more of shock, your breath lapsing momentarily.

"Oh." You said meekly, not even sure what to think about Dahomey having a human child. For all your life you had always known the fae as a species that delighted in playing trickery and acts of mischief on humans, it was odd for a fae to take one in as their own. But then again, you had always known vampires as human hunters, and yet, there was no mistaking the way Sylvia felt about Grace.

Looking over at Chan, you realised that perhaps humans weren't as cut off from your world as you thought. And you were certainly glad about that.

"She found him when he was a child, discarded by his parents for reason's Dahomey never found out," Chan talked quietly and sluggishly, but you listened intently, "She said she knew she wasn't supposed to get involved in human affairs, said something about the way fae were back then and how they didn't like humans. But she also said that she couldn't bear leaving a helpless child on their own, no matter if it was fae or human. So she took him in and she raised him, kept him secret, and loved him like he was her own child until the day he died."

Chan's voice was getting weaker and weaker and you could tell he was slipping way into unconsciousness. So you didn't ask him anymore questions, you just watched silently as his eyes drooped close, your entire chest warm knowing you got to have moments like these with him again. You couldn't guarantee that you'd have moments like these forever, but you momentarily out that out of your mind so you could appreciate what time you did get to have together.

The rest of the drive back to your house was quiet, Chan's even breath the only sound in the car, the calming rhythmic nature enough to fianlly lull you into exhaustion as well. By the time you pulled up at your house your body was practically begging you to drag it into bed and not wake for days on end. Chan looked so peaceful asleep, so you felt kind of bad shaking him awake, but you couldn't very well leave him in the car.
