As I'm taking my boat out to Mako, trying to clear my head from the distorted line of events that had just occurred, I realize that the gas is running frighteningly low.

I had been steeped too far in a mental funk to even think about refilling the tank. Luckily, I have just enough power to make it to shore.

I walk up the island and head into the cove right by the Moon Pool. The sight of a beautiful full moon is able to slightly calm me down as I contemplate what my life has become.

I trace my fingers along the walls of the cove, with memories suddenly pouring back into view. So much has happened here, so much that I will never get back.

I hear someone calling my name and frantic footsteps. It's Zane.

"Lewis!" Zane shouts. I turn away. I can't bear the sight of him anymore.

"You need to listen to me," he says, breathing heavily from just having run all the way up the island.

"Because it's worked out so great in the past," I say with my arms crossed and my back still turned to him.

"Lewis, please don't do this," Zane says pleadingly, "I know I've been a psycho and a downright awful human being, but that's behind us. I love you. I always have."

My expression softens, but I still stand my ground, not even giving Zane the courtesy of showing him my face.

"Look," he says, "You're doing exactly what Charlotte wants. You're falling right into her trap."

I turn slightly, "She already got what she wanted, Zane. It's over."

He expels a dramatic sigh, "That's just the thing, Lewis. She wanted to destroy our friendship and the amazing bond we all share, but she hasn't gotten it yet, not if we don't let her."

I drop my hands belligerently, "So what're you saying, Zane? We should just make up like nothing happened? You can't just erase these kinds of things."

The bright moon that I once saw outside the cove slowly glides over the top of the volcano. The Moon Pool starts to bubble and boil magically, the way it always does when there is a full moon out.

Zane takes a step towards me, "It doesn't have to be night and day. We can work on this. Together."

Zane makes sense, but I'm still hurt by the whole ordeal. I can't imagine ever returning to a life similar to the one I led just a day ago.

I turn my face to him so that he can see my profile, "Nothing makes sense anymore, Zane."

Zane steps closer, "Let's make it make sense, Lewis."

He tries to grab my hand, but it catches me off guard and I start to stumble. My foot slips and I now find myself transported from the dry sandy floor of the cove to the simmering enchanted water beneath.

"Lewis!" I can hear Zane call out. My head gets fully submerged under the nautical hypnosis that is the water of the Moon Pool. When I reach the surface, I hear yet again another pair of footsteps as Zane rushes towards me to help me out.

Before he can touch my outstretched arm, Charlotte of all people, appears.
