                                                      Chapter Twenty- Blood Runs Deep

''I know what Valentine's plan is.''

Olivia looked at the older Wayland with a raised brow. She was already skeptical of him and his words were making her even more skeptical. ''How?'' she asked, '' You were a prisoner there, weren't you? Then how did you manage to hear Valentine's plan? '' she paused and narrowed her eyes before adding, ''Unless you know something that you aren't telling us.'' His heart jumped at that and Olivia nearly slammed her hand on the table in triumphant. Gotcha! She had hit  the right spot. He was lying to them, the jumping of his heart told her that much.

''What are you talking about?'' Jace asked, looking at the brunette with furrowed brows. ''You think he's hiding something from us?''

Yes. ''No.'' she lied and sighed. She hated lying. But she couldn't tell Jace about her suspicions because she knew that once he knew his father's truth, he would be hurt--he would break--and she couldn't bear that. ''I'm just confused.''

''So am I.'' Clary spoke. Her eyes were free of tears, but Olivia could still see a shimmer of hurt flickering in her sister's eyes. ''Why would Valentine tell a prisoner his plans?''

''He didn't. Not directly.''' Michael admitted, looking anywhere but at the brunette. ''But he gave me a way to learn about his plans.''

Jace frowned. ''How do you mean?''

''He injected me with downworlder blood.''

Olivia pulled her lips in a thin line. He was again lying. She could sense it.

Jace, however, could not. ''Valentine.'' he hissed, his jaw clenching in fury and his hands balling into fists. That man had experimented on Olivia and tortured his father. He had hurt the two people that Jace cared about the most.

I'll make him pay for this.

''The pain was excruciating. Sometimes I was sick for days. But it's not often you got a Shadowhunter to experiment on.'' he sighed and looked at the table that was in front of them. ''So I guess that's why he always stopped short of killing me. But, little by little, I developed enhanced hearing and vision.''

Valentine paced around, his brows  pulled in a frown as he thought about the immediate danger that was looming over them. ''If the Seelie scouts were able to find us here, it's only a matter of time before more dangerous enemies turn up.'' he spoke and came to a stop in front of Jocelyn, who, despite all their efforts, was still floating unconsciously in a green mist.

''So we need to make a move against the New York Institute now.'' Valentine declared, his eyes fixed on his ex-wife as Blackwell, one of his men, stood next to him. ''See, I don't need more than one Forsaken to breach the wards.''

''The Clave will throw everything it has at you.'' Blackwell warned.

He hummed in thought. ''So I need a base of operation closer to the Institute. They will look everywhere except right under their noses.''
