                                                                             Chapter Fourteen- Loses

Simon Lewis was dead, that much was clear to the group of five shadowhunters as they and Raphael--he had shown up outside the Institute with Simon dead in his arms-- the vampire carried the now-dead boy down to the Institute's basement.

''Simon,'' Clary sobbed out and clung to Izzy, who was trying her best to comfort the extremely emotional girl, but since she wasn't Olivia, she couldn't offer Clary as much comfort as her sister would have. ''Simon, Simon.'' she wailed. A part of her wished that he would wake up and tell her that all of this was a joke that he had orchestrated, but the other part, the logical part, the practical part, knew that this was no joke.

Simon Lewis, her best friend, really was dead. And he was not coming back.

That realization made her sob even loudly and Izzy, whose arm she was still clutching onto, started to rub her back in comfort.

Continuing with her sobbing, Clary watched with teary eyes as Jace and Raphael lowered him on the wooden table, and then Ian, who had grabbed an old book off of a chair, moved forward and gently placed the book under the boy's head, giving him a sort of cushion.

Clary removed her hand from Izzy's arm and knelt next to her dead best friend. Clutching his hand, she sniffed and felt her heart break into a tiny million pieces. This was too much for her to handle alone. She needed her sister to help her get through this. She needed her support system. ''Liv,''

Ian and Jace sucked in a breath sharply and simultaneously snapped their heads towards Clary.

Hearing Olivia's name caused Ian's heart to flutter and his entire body to become stiff. That girl, even though he had known her for only a few hours, was doing something to him, something no other girl had ever done before.

Izzy and Alec noticed Ian's stiffened posture and shared a quick glance, immediately understanding what was going on with their brother. Jace, however, didn't understand Ian's body posture because he was more focused on worrying about Olivia and her whereabouts. ''Where's she anyway?''

''She said she was going to the Jade Wolf,'' Alec replied from his spot, looking at Ian for a few more seconds and then slowly moving his eyes onto his parabatai. ''She might still be there.''

Jace looked back at Clary, who was continuously crying and murmuring Olivia's name, and sighed. He knew that Clary needed her sister, but he also knew that seeing Simon dead would hurt Olivia just as deeply as it was hurting Clary.

'' Call her, Jace,'' Ian spoke, regaining his posture and locking his eyes with his adoptive brother. He knew, just like Jace did, that Olivia would be hurt by this news, but even then, she still had the right to know. And no one could take that right away from her. ''She needs to know.''
