Chapter Nine-Stone Cold Mother.
Olivia was not an early bird. She usually preferred to sleep till nine in the morning, and sometimes (very rarely, to be more specific,) till eight.
However, today was an exception.
Why? Because Clary woke her up by saying that the purple pendant that was around her neck had allowed her to see a glimpse of their mother. That piece of information had shocked Olivia, yes, but what pulled her out of her sleepy state was when the younger girl told her that she had seen their father, Valentine, in the vision as well, and he had demanded the Mortal Cup in return for their mother.
''Ugh, I wish I could stab that son of a bitch with a sword,'' Olivia muttered angrily as she and Clary exited from her room and walked down the hall towards the younger girl's room.
''So do I,'' Clary said, her face becoming a mixture of disgust and hatred as she remembered how Valentine was using his own wife as bait to get what he wanted. If there was an award for the best father, she thought, it definitely wouldn't go to ours.
The two girls took a few turns before they finally reached Clary's room. As soon as they stepped inside the room, Olivia saw Jace standing by the window with Clary's necklace held between his fingers.
Olivia wanted to say that she was surprised by his presence, but she was not. So, she didn't say it. Instead, she said something else. ''Morning, blondie.''
Jace, upon hearing those words, quickly turned his head around and briefly grinned at the brunette before turning his attention back towards the necklace that was in his hand.
After inspecting it for a few minutes, he lifted it in the air and looked at Clary. ''Are you sure that Valentine spoke to you?"
''Yeah,'' the girl nodded her head, ''He said my name. He said your mother for the cup.''
''Who said that?'' a familiar voice reached the trio's ears, and they turned around to see Alec standing in the doorway with his brows pulled together in a confused frown. ''Valentine,'' they replied simultaneously. '' He's with my mother,'' Clary added.
Alec stiffened. ''And he can speak to you through that necklace?" he asked, taking a step forward and warily glancing at the necklace that was in Jace's hand. ''Here in the Institute?"
Clary again nodded her head. ''It's like when I saw Dot.''
''It's a portal shard,'' Jace said as he looked at the necklace with narrowed eyes. ''That's why your mother made sure you had it.''
Olivia frowned. ''What's a portal shard?''
''It's a broken piece of a portal,'' the blonde male explained, ''Your mother must have somehow gotten her hands on it and then gave it to Clary.''
