Among the Shadows: Chapter 10:
I just wanted to say, THANK YOU! Every fan I get increases my confidence in my writing. I know the story is going pretty slow, but I'm still gathering my ideas and am slowly working my way to what I see my story of becoming. Thank you for your support and patience!
Victoria's POV:
"Cara, wake up! CARA!"
"Nathan, slapping her is CLEARLY doing no good." I sighed.
"Everyone! I got this." Zach said dramatically as he pushed Nathan and me aside.
"Zach, NO! Bad ide-"
Too late. Cara's head shot up from my lap, her hair - and my jeans - soaking wet from the water that Zach decided to splash on Cara's face.
Cara sat up and looked around. I tried to cover up my laugh. She was truly a sight. Her once straightened hair was now soaking wet, beginning to show the true wavy form. Her eyes were wide, taking in the sight of all of us trying to stifle our laughs.
"Who. Did. That." She said with her teeth clenched.
"That would be I." Zach raised his hand, unaware of the wrath that was soon going to come upon him.
Cara's eyes flicked to his face, and her eyes turned hard. She glared at him, and that's when I couldn't hold in my laugh any longer. It began with a giggle and turned into a full laughing fit, tears included. I rolled on the floor, holding my stomach since it was beginning to hurt from all the laughing.
Nathan joined in after unsuccessfully trying to calm me down; Zach was grinning from ear to ear.
Cara got up, wrung her hair out, making sure the water dropped into the coffee cup Zach was drinking, and stormed off, muttering something about finding a "God damn, bloody bathroom."
Zach scowled at her retreating figure before dumping the coffee into the house plant that was located suitably next to where he was sitting on the floor.
"HEY! That's a RARE plant!" Nathan screeched.
"Whatever. You're such a girl." Zach muttered.
It was my turn to scowl. "What's that supposed to mean?" I crossed my arms.
Zach looked at my expression then my jeans. Changing the subject, he smirked and said, "I think someone forgot the purpose of a bathroom."
I looked down at the water stain on my jeans conveniently located where it would make anyone want to crawl into a hole and hide from embarrassment.
I deepened my scowl and put on my best glare, jumping to my feet and stomping off towards where Cara had previously retreated to.
But not before making sure to step on Zach's hand that he was leaning on.
He yelped with pain and it was my turn to smirk.
"THAT'S WHAT YOU GET, JERK!" I yelled behind me. I heard Nathan chuckle before hearing a "oomph". I assumed Zach threw his empty coffee cup at Nathan's face.
Well, aren't we a violent bunch today? I thought to myself.
I took in my surroundings as I passed the dining room table and walked down a hallway with four doors. At the end of the hallway was yet another large window that overlooked the lake and forest. Next to the window was a spiraling staircase leading to...another floor? Wow this apartment is huge. Wait a minute...I spun around to face the window again. It was night already? Wow. Realization hit me - I've been at Nathan's apartment all day long and now it was - I flipped my phone open - 9:49 pm!
"Cara!" I yelled out.
The third door in the hallway opened, revealing a red faced, angry Cara.
"What?!" She snapped as I stepped into the bathroom. I looked myself over in the mirror, scrunching my eyebrows at what I saw. I really needed to get more sleep. And...my hair could use some more volume, for it just hung limply past my shoulders, reaching mid-back. Cara finished attempting to brush her hair smooth and carefully pulled it back into a loose ponytail, making sure her bangs were straight enough to even be called bangs. I guessed she brushed it several times to get that effect without using a blow dryer or flat iron.
Cara finally looked my way, sighed loudly and said, "Can I help you?"
"Cara, it's not our fault you passed out the minute we told you Nathan and Zach was brothers. Zach was just trying to help...in his own way." I pouted, giving her my famous puppy dog eyes. Yes, I am well known for my great expressions and my convincing skills. "Forgive us? Or at least me?"
"Yeah, yeah; you're forgiven. But I'm still going to get my revenge on Zach because I feel like it." She said with an evil glint in her eyes.
"Anyways, now that things are cleared up...we need to go home. Our parents are going to freak if they find out we're here." I said hurriedly, remembering the reason I called out for Cara in the first place.
"Really? It can't be that late..." Cara trailed off. I flipped open my phone again and shoved it in her face.
Her eyes went wide and she threw open the half closed bathroom door and ran back to where the two brothers were bickering about something I assumed was irrelevant and immature.
Her eyes narrowed when she saw Zach look at her freshened appearance with approval. She hastily threw on her jacket and threw mine to me.
"Hey what's the rush?" Nathan and Zach said at the same time, standing up with their arms crossed.
"Wow that's creepy..." I muttered under my breath before continuing, this time louder, "It's 10:00 pm and my mom has no clue where I am, neither does Cara's mom. We should really get going."
Nathan ran his hand through his hair, "Well it was an interesting day," Nathan started, looking at me with an expression I couldn't read. I blushed and looked out the window, trying to avoid his gaze.
"It was nice meeting you, Cara." Nathan nodded his head towards her.
"Yeah, try not to pass out every time you see me though." Zach smirked.
I tried to hide my grin as I turned my head to look at Cara. She was right about to burst.
"Alright, we had a nice time. Thanks Nathan, for everything," I gave him a smile. "Nice meeting you Zach." I yelled over my shoulder as I dragged a fuming Cara out the door and into the elevator.
"It's alright, Cara, deep breaths." I tried to sooth her.
One minute of weird elevator music later, we reached the parking lot and realization hit us both at the same time.
Cara stomped her foot once and groaned, "I left my car in front of Starbucks!"
Suddenly a voice behind us made us jump up.
"I was wondering when you would realize that."
