Kaito stared intently at the screens of his computer. He was just about to crack a billion-dollar digital safe. Not that he was nervous, he had hacked countless computers, data centers or safes, but every time he was gripped by this feeling of tension when he was completely immersed in the digital world full of numbers and variables. He was sitting in a darkened room with no windows in an abandoned machine factory for which no one wanted to pay the demolition costs. Before he had found this factory, he had always changed his place of residence for security reasons, in case the government could find him.
Yes, he, Kaito Ekō, was one of the most wanted hackers in the world. He was nothing but a shadow that no-one knew anything about. He had already carried out 263 hacker attacks on the best secured servers, networks, and data centers, and yet the secret service had not even the slightest clue who he was or what gender he was.
Two weeks ago he lived in England until he had moved to his homeland Japan and discovered this abandoned factory on the edge of old Tokyo. He had been interested in computer language since he was born, and at the age of 14, he had already hacked into the Kempeitai, a Japanese secret service.
He wasn't greedy for money or anything; he made these attacks like that just for the joy of showing the big corporations how stupid they were to believe they were the smartest. He also loved this mathematical world of numbers and was thrilled every time he could dive into it again. During his childhood, he had been an outsider, a nerd with whom no one wanted to be friends. He had been so lonely that he had decided to banish the loneliness and learn how to do everything by himself and not to rely on anyone. Before he drowned in his dark, lonely hole, he pushed it further down and held onto nothing but himself.
Now, at almost 17 years of age he was a well trained, highly talented man who didn't get involved with anyone and to whom nobody was important except himself. He was nothing but a shadow of this world that nobody could grasp.
Or at least that's what he believed.
...
"Team Alpha, secure the entrances! Team Beta, stay outside as a reserve! Come on, Team Gamma, get in there!" barked the Captain of the Psia, a Japanese secret service that just had the chance to catch one of the most dangerous hackers.
For years they had tried to finally put this cyber criminal behind bars, until they received an anonymous tip four days ago that the wanted man had come to Japan and where he was currently. After days of checking the mysterious source, it seemed to be reliable, but nothing more could be found out about it. Quickly and with military experience, he and his Gamma team stormed the factory.
"Contact!" a soldier screamed, shortly afterwards a shot was fired, whereupon the soldier fell to the groun and a pool of blood formed around him.
"On the ground! Psia, Japanese secret service! Resistance is useless, the entire building is surrounded!," shouted the captain's dark voice as he took cover. Almost in protest, another series of shots were fired. But he was used to that, nobody in his entire career had raised his hands and kneeled down on the floor after this sentence as he would have liked, but he was paid for that, so he did the job correctly. After a few volleys of the electrical pistols from his hard-trained soldiers, the shots stopped.
"Come on G-13, secure him!," he ordered to the soldier next to him.
With practiced caution the soldier ventured out of his protective cover and approached the motionless body of the attacker on the ground, while his comrades secured the area and unit medic examined the fallen soldier.
"A Berretta 92 FS," the medic stated. A 0,975 kg (unloaded), handy, black, selfloading pistole in caliber 9 x 19mm, nothing special, but deadly enough to take out one of his valuable soldiers, as the captain angrily noticed.
"It is him!", informed the soldier whom he had sent to check the attacker, after he finished comparing the young man that was lying on the ground with the picture that the anonymous source had also given them.
"Good, G-3 and G-7, carry him!
"Mission successful," he informed the Psia headquarters with his radio.
"We're done here, back to the headquarters," he said to his men.
