My head bobbed up and down, and my eyelids drooped with every second. I was exhausted. I had been up all night, peeling potatoes for the Princess's wedding tomorrow. It was almost 3am, and I was fed up of looking at these vegetables. The lantern's light flickered and grew out of focus. Before I knew it, I was drifting away into my dreams.
It didn't last long though, as I was rudely awakened by my head whacking against the wooden table. Thank goodness it didn't hit the peeler that I held in my hand. Groaning, I rubbed my eyes in an attempt to wake up. I looked at the pile of peeled potatoes, then turned to the unpeeled pile. There was definitely a huge difference between them, and the odds weren't in my favor.
"I hate potatoes." I grumbled placing my head in my hands in frustration.
"Then why are you peeling so many?" a male voice chimed from behind me, and I almost leapt out of my skin with fright. I shot up from my chair and smacked my head on a few pots and pans that hung from the ceiling.
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry!" the guy said frantically as the cookware clattered on the floor noisily.
"Agh..." I rubbed my head and shut my eyes, trying to ease the pain. "Why did you sneak up on me?" I said with my eyes still closed. Who was this guy who thinks it's ok to terrify girls at 3a.m.?
"I-I thought you were talking to me!" he exclaimed, and I opened my eyes to see the culprit. My breath hitched as I came face to face with the freckled, blue-hair streaked, genius son of the King.
"Prince Varian!" I breathed out, stepping backwards and hitting into the chair. "Wh-what are you doing down here?" I stuttered, "I mean, you can be anywhere it's your hous-" I stopped, "Palace! Your palace. Wait, it's you parent's - the King and Queen!" I wanted to scream, I had never been so awkward and clumsy. Why did I have to do it in front of the Prince. He seemed to give a slight laugh at my reaction, but not in a condescending way.
"I'm really sorry, I didn't know anyone was down here this late." Prince Varian rubbed the back of his neck, "I just wanted to make a sandwich." he gave a slight smile. I was a little surprised by his response. I never thought of Princes as people who eat sandwiches. I suppose you couldn't eat caviar all day, the novelty would wear off.
"Yes of course! Sandwich..." I nodded and ran to the bread bin, grabbing a serrated knife.
"No, no, it's okay!" he took the knife from me, his hand grazing mine, "I can do it myself, don't worry." the Prince assured me with a smile. I nodded and backed away, still facing him. Then, I felt a hard surface hit the middle of my back. Of course I hit the chair again. Varian turned to me and looked concerned.
