I don't get nervous until I open the door, and my dad's sitting at the kitchen counter, mostly likely working on his new project. I was hoping we would make it up to my room without any interruptions, but I know we can't avoid him now. I just hope this goes as well as I thought it would, especially because now I think that Paisley might mean something to me.

Paisley and I take off our shoes, leaving them on the rack by the front door, and she stays behind while I go up to my dad and gently tap him on the shoulder. He spins around, taking his headphones off as he grins at me, pulling me into a gentle hug.

He lets go and stands up, walking towards Paisley as she shifts from foot to foot, her eyes focused on me instead of him. She's practically crying for help, so I walk over to her, slipping my arm around her waist as I pull her close.

"Dad, I want you to meet Paisley, my girlfriend."

"It's nice to meet you Paisley." He says, extending his hand out for her to shake. "I've heard a lot about you."

She reaches out to shake his hand, some of her confidence coming back. "It's nice to meet you Mr. Heighten."

He laughs, running his hand through his salt and pepper hair.

"Call me Mark. Mr. Heighten makes me feel old." I can hear my mom's footsteps down the hall, speeding up as she gets closer.

"Paisley, it's so nice to see you!" She says, as she comes into view. Before Paisley can reply, my mom pulls her into a hug. Paisley freezes before relaxing into the hug, a small smile gracing her features.

"It's so nice to see you too Ms. Heighten!"

"Didn't you tell her to use our first names Mark?" Mom groans, playfully glaring at dad who pretends to be intimidated, slowly backing up with a smile on his face.

My parents are now both invested in a conversation with Paisley, but all I can focus on is how right this feels. I thought I would feel guilty bringing Paisley to meet my family, but instead it feels so right, like it was meant to be. It doesn't feel fake, at least to me. It feels perfect.

I can tell that Paisley's comfortable now, as she hasn't stopped smiling, and it seems like she isn't the only one. My parents are laughing at something she's saying, as my dad catches my eye and winks at me. It seems like I'm not the only one that likes her, and before I know it Paisley could even be replacing me as the favorite.

I walk over into the conversation, gently tugging Paisley away and towards the stairs. Her hand is warm in mine as she lets me pull her up the stairs, my parents saying their goodbyes to Paisley as we head into my room. She steps into my room while I watch her by the door, and when she sits down on my bed, her eyes on me, I realize what I've been missing this whole time.

Holy shit, I think I'm in love with her.
