I slam my tray on the lunch table, and sit down angrily. My friends look up, surprised.
"What's up Brooke?" Jayden asks, and she looks concerned, frightened even. Maybe she thinks that I'm mad at her for beating up Paisley, but honestly, I don't care about that. This is about the favor that Mr. Ramirez asked me.
I groan. "I have to tutor Paisley." I mumble.
Morgan stops chewing her sandwich (lettuce, cheese, and mayo on rye bread, the same one she eats every day), and looks up. She swallows and asks, "Did you just say you're tutoring The Devil?"
I put my head in my hands. "Mr. Ramirez asked me too and I didn't want to leave a bad impression so I said yes."
"What the fuck were you thinking?" Jayden looks mad. "She's an asshole."
I glare at her. "Yeah dumbass, I know. And it's only until Mr. Ramirez can find a daycare for his kid or whatever."
"When do you start?" Devin asks.
"Today. He said that her school missed a key unit last year so she has to learn it all before November. He wants us to meet up every day after school until she has it all down."
Greg whistles. "Damn B, that sucks."
"Yeah, and I have to make plans with her to meet up, which sucks even more."
Matthew nods his head towards Jake, who's sitting at the same table as Paisley.
"Or you could tell Jake to do it."
"Oh my god Matthew you're a genius." I grin at him as he pretends to flip his hair, (which is hard because he has none.)
I take my phone out and text Jake.
Baby B: Jake can you do something for your favorite sister?
Big J: ya, what does mya need? :)
Baby B: Asshole. I need you to tell Paisley to meet me at the
library after school today.
Big J: y? don't u hate her?
Baby B: I do. I'm also her history tutor.
Big J: haha sucks 2 be u.
Jake gets up and whispers something to Paisley, who looks directly at me, then says something back to Jake.
Big J: she has football til 4 so she can meet u then
Baby B: Okay. Thanks Jake, I owe you.
Big J: hell ya u do loser
I grin and flip him off while Morgan tries to peek over my shoulder at our conversation. I pinch her and turn my phone off.
"What'd she say?" Morgan asks as she rubs the spot where I pinched her.
"Don't act like you didn't see what she said. But for those who aren't nosy, I'm meeting her at the library at four."
Jayden frowns, confused. "But school ends at two thirty."
I roll my eyes. "Yeah and football practice ends at four dumbass."
She grins, "Oh yeah."
The rest of lunch goes by rather uneventfully, but I can feel Paisley's eyes on my back the whole time. I've always had this sixth sense where I can tell when she's staring at me. But it doesn't matter and I walk out of lunch much happier than I was walking in.
I'm walking down the hall when a figure jogs up next to me. It's Paisley.
"What do you want? I groan, glaring at her and picking up my pace. My English class is only down the hall, and if I walk fast enough, I can avoid a conversation altogether.
She sighs and grabs my arm, pulling me into an empty classroom and shutting the door. She crosses her arms and stands in front of the door.
"You know, you're going to have to talk to me at some point Brooke."
"It doesn't have to be anytime soon." I say, trying to push my way past her. She grabs my arm and pulls me back.
"Now. We need to talk now Brooke."
"What do you want me to say Paisley?" I yell.
"You could start by letting me explain."
I scoff. "What is there to explain? We slept together ONCE, and you promised to keep it a secret. Instead, as soon as I started dating Mike, you told everyone I was gay and Mike dumped me the next day." My voice is getting louder. "You ruined my life!"
Paisley looks down at her shoes before meeting my eyes.
"I was jealous."
"You were... jealous?" I snapped. "So you thought the best way to break Mike and I up was to tell everyone I was gay?"
"I know it was fucked up. I just was so mad seeing you with someone else that I... I just broke. I'm really sorry Brooke."
"How about this? I'll tutor you, as long as you stay out of my way. Don't talk to me outside of tutoring and don't get off topic. Don't fight with any of my friends. We're not friends and we'll never be friends."
Paisley looks sad. "Deal."
She holds the door open and I step out of the door right as the late bell rings.
"Shit!" I curse. "I can't be late."
"What class do you have?"
I glare at her. "What part of us not being friends did you not get, Lewis?"
She grabs my schedule as I make sounds of protest. "Great. We both have English next. Just follow my lead." She hands my schedule back and lets me lead the way. She knocks on the door when we get there and Mrs. Thine looks up from where she's writing on the board.
Mrs. Thine has been teaching at FHA since my parents were here, and she was in her forties then. She definitely hasn't been getting younger, and is one of those teachers who refuses to get a smartboard or a computer because according to her, all electronic devices will take over our world someday and she won't be part of the problem. I mean, she probably isn't wrong, but that's not the point.
"Why are you late ladies?" She questions, pulling her cashmere sweater closer around her and frowning.
I take a deep breath, ready to apologize profusely, but Paisley talks first.
"I'm sorry Mrs. Thine. Today's my first day and Brooke was helping me get here because I was lost. It's my fault, ma'am."
Mrs. Thine nods, "Okay, well I guess I can let you girls go, but if you're late again, It's detention for a month. Is that understood ladies?"
We both nod and she points towards two chairs, side by side in the back of the classroom. "You can sit there. Grab a copy of Romeo and Juliet, we're going to be reading the first chapter today."
Oh joy, now I have to sit next to Paisley for the rest of the semester. Mrs. Thine doesn't let you move seats, at least that's what Morgan said. She gets to sit next to Devin for the rest of the year though, so it works out for her. I have to sit next to The Devil. I slide into my seat and get ready for what's sure to be an interesting hour.
Double update because I felt bad leaving you guys on a cliffhanger. Tell me what you think of these chapters! I love you!
