The Heighten family household is usually hectic in the morning, but on the first day of senior year, it's even worse. My twin brother, Jake, was being an ass, and hogging the one bathroom we all shared. It was finally Jake and I's first day of senior year, our little sister Mya's first day of ninth grade.
"Jake get your ass out of the bathroom before I kick it!" I shout, waiting impatiently outside the bathroom, my arms crossed. He steps out smirking, his curly brown hair wet from the shower.
"You could try short stuff."
I shove his shoulder and head into the shower before Mya gets up and ruins my alone time. She has this habit of coming into the bathroom and yelling at me instead of waiting outside like a normal person, and I would rather not deal with her right now.
Since our family isn't rich like the other kids who go to our private school, Jake, Mya, and I all share one dinky subaru. I'm not sure how it still works since it was my dad's in high school, but I've decided not to question it because I'm just glad that I don't have to walk to school.
Even though Jake and I are twins, we're nothing alike. He's the athletic one in the family, playing football, basketball, and lacrosse all while being one of the most popular kids in school. He's also not painfully single like I am, though I'm not sure why anyone would go out with him, especially Sasha Codert, the head cheerleader and one of the nicest people in school.
It's not like I don't have friends, just that I have a much smaller friend group. There's Morgan Vitey. I guess you could call her the badass of our group. She doesn't have a stable home life, with her dad coming home drunk every night and her mom sleeping around with every guy in Fir Hollow. She's at my house almost every night, my parents even gave her her own room. Then there's Devin Hamdlet. She plays like every sport imaginable and hardly has time for anything else. Her parents are super rich and she lives in a giant mansion up on Goodle hill.
There's Matthew Bader and his boyfriend Greg. They're the cutest couple in our friend group along with Chris and Bri. Chris had been friends with us for as long as I can remember. He was severely bullied in middle school and ever since then he's been quiet and jumpy all the time. That is, until he met Bri. She pulled him out of his shell and even though she is one of the most popular kids in school, we eagerly accepted her into our group. Finally, there's Jayden Fuller. Straight A student, soccer captain, and girl whisper. Jayden can do literally anything she puts her mind to. And that's it. My little family.
"Brooke. Brooke. Brooke!" Mya yells, trying to get my attention. "It's time to leave or else we're going to be late. And I can't be late on my first day of high school. Do you know how uncool I'd seem! I'll be like you!" She's started pacing now.
I laugh. "Calm down squirt, we'll be fine." I start walking out of my room and down the stairs.
"Don't call me squirt!" Mya groans.
I grin and run down the stairs to say hi to my mom and dad. I can already smell the traditional first day of school breakfast in our house, pancakes, waffles, eggs, toast, and muffins from the small cafe in Fir Hollow.
"Good morning to my favorite daughters!" My dad's voice booms through the kitchen. He comes up to me and envelopes Mya and I in a giant bear hug. Mya squirms and tries to get away, but my dad is too strong.
He finally lets go and goes back to making pancakes so my mom can hug both of us. She's tearing up as she hugs Mya, and when she gets to me, she's full on crying. I hug her while patting her back.
"I just can't believe this is the last time I get to do this for you and Jake. It seems like only yesterday I was dropping you guys off for the first day of kindergarten." She breathes into my neck.
"I know mom, I can't believe it either. At least you'll still have Mya around."
" I know, I know. But it just won't be the same. You'll still come visit right?"
I laugh. "Mom, I'm not planning on moving around the world. I'll come visit anytime I can."
She wipes her tears on her apron and stands up straight, looking me up and down. We stand like this for a long time, until she says, "I'm just so proud of you Brooke. I can't wait to see what you do next. No matter what, your dad and I will always be proud of you. We love you."
I smile, my eyes getting watery. "Thanks mom. Love you too."
Mya rolls her eyes. "Why are you guys crying? Brooke and Jake aren't leaving for like 10 months. You guys are so weird."
My dad walks over to Mya and gives her a fist bump. "Let's start eating guys. Mya can't be late or else she'll have a heart attack."
Mya gasps and walks over to Jake who's on his phone in the corner. "At least one person in this family is tolerable."
Jake looks up from his phone. "Hey baby M, whats up?" Mya groans and sits down at the table to eat.
"Never mind, no one in this family is even sane."
My dad pretends to flip his hair (which is non-existent because when he got cancer he had to shave it all off) and rolls his eyes. "I totally agree with you Mya. OMG our whole family is like totes annoying."
Mya groans and starts eating as fast as she can so she can get away from us, while the rest of us start cracking up. Yup, this year is no different than every other year. At least, that's what I thought.
I hope you guys enjoy this chapter!
