Dedicated to arctic-lights for the beautiful cover that she made.

It's awesome and I absolutely adore it.

Thank you so much! Dylan and Emily thank you.

Dylan's P.O.V:

"How did I say that? I am not supposed to say that! I broke the rule!" I cursed, tugging at my hair as closed my eyes.

"Since when did swearing at a teacher and rule breaking hurt you?" Jake asked as he stood in the doorway.

"I love Emily." I muttered.

"You really do? I mean, what is love exactly?" He asked, not looking really surprised.

"I don't know. I just like her a lot! So much that I think it goes over the 'Like' mark." I sighed.

"You know, there is this test that Samantha took once. It's regarding how much you love your partner." He suggested.

"No way. I am not turning into more of a chick than I already sound in my head."

"Alright. Do you know how she feels?" He asked.

I snorted.

"Emily and love is like me and football. Doesn't work out."

"But bro, if you think you are falling for her, and you are absolutely sure she isn't then what is the future of this relationship?" He asked.

I looked at him in shock.

"Why are you sounding like Thomas? Hell, why are you sounding like female Thomas?!"

He raised his hands.

"I'm just trying to help you out."

We both sat silently. My head was spinning. This is not supposed to happen. Or maybe, I am getting to worked up about this.

Maybe Emily's such same reaction just overwhelmed me into thinking that I love her.

We both know this relationship is just for fun. So after graduation, we break this off.

Then why the mere thought of breaking up is making me nervous and anxious?

Suddenly Jake started laughing. I looked at him.

"Remember New Year's?" He asked.

I chuckled.

"Who doesn't?"

The entire town remembered last New Year.

The four of us had gone to the biggest new Year's party. The mayor himself was present.

Everything was lavish and glamorous: And the food was mouth-watering.

The girls too.

Anyway, for the countdown, they had put on a video on a huge screen which showed a girl doing countdown.

Now, to make that year special, we reached out to the remote.

When the countdown began, 10...9...8...7...6, I flirted with the girl who held the remote control. After the distraction, Bryan reached for the remote and pressed the pause button.

Everyone went frantic, looking for the remote.

Jake and Thomas joined them, pretending to look for the remote.

Then Bryan shouted, from behind the bushes, 'Wait for it.' And then pressed the button.

But inside of pressing the resume button, he placed the backward one.

4...5...6...7...8...

To tell the story in short, Bryan and the three of us ran as fast as our feet could allow.

"It was fun." Jake sighed.

"Life was simpler back then." Jake said as he closed his eyes.

"What makes it so complicated now?" I asked him, raising an eyebrow.

Jake chuckled with his eyes closed.

"Nothing. Just a girl that you love who doesn't love you back." He said, patting my arm before getting up.

"I don't love her. I just realised, it was spontaneous." I said too quickly.

"Whatever you say bro. Just remember, a heart once broken is really difficult to put back together." He said before leaving.

I jumped onto my bed and closed my eyes.

Emily's words echoed in my head.

'Love always hurts people.'

'Who in the world actually loves anyone? It always results in them leaving.'

I let out a groan. Why am I hearing this?

I twisted and turned in my bed the entire night but nothing could take my mind off this topic.

I even talked to her for an hour and though it did distract me, it left me thinking about this more than ever.

No. This is just a spontaneous feeling. By next week, all of this will be gone.

I don't feel love for Emily. I just like her a lot.

Too much for my own good.

Emily's P.O.V:

"Another call from mom." Rebecca said, sitting on the couch besides mine, as she ignored her phone.

"What's the count now?" I asked her as I turned the page of the book.

"I stopped counting after twelve." She said.

I hummed as I read the book.

Mom has been calling since two days. That means a day after she bailed out on us. Again.

She says she wants to apologise and make up for spoiling our birthday.

Rebecca hung up on her saying that if she could give us our eighteenth birthday back, we'll forgive her.

Well, I agree with Rebecca. She made a mistake and though she is our mother, it was hard to forgive her.

"I hope she stops trying." Rebecca muttered.

"She won't unless we forgive her." I sighed as I closed the book.

"Well, that won't happen anytime soon." Rebecca declared as she stared at my book.

Both of us kept quiet. I tried to concentrate on my book.

"Why is forgiving strangers easy than forgiving the loved ones?" Rebecca asked after a while.

"Isn't that always the question?" I muttered as I snapped the book shut and kept it on the the table.

Rebecca continued to stare at the To Kill A Mocking Bird.
