Chapter 24: Emily, will you be my best friend?

"Why are you so down today?" Samantha asked me on the way to English class.

"It's nothing." I shrugged as I took my English books and locked my locker.

"Of course it is something!" She said.

"I really don't wanna talk about this now." I looked in front, not even sparing a glance at her. If I saw the concern in her eyes, I would break down and Emily Sky never ever breaks down in public.

"Okay. If you wanna talk, you know where to find me." She smiled as we parted ways. She had History now, which she looked awfully pleased about. I wonder what made her so happy. As far as I knew, Chad wasn't in History. That reminds me, what's going on between them?

"Good Morning students!" Teacher entered and told us to settle down in our places.

"So students, today we will learn more about Emily Dickinson." She announced as she wrote it on the board. I already knew about her. She was the poet who interested me the most. I started doodling, making random patterns in my notebook when all the class went silent. I looked up to see Castle stroll inside without any care in the world. He sat beside me and smirked at me.

"Morning Quartza." He grinned as he sat leisurely in his chair. He said it pretty loud for the whole class to hear it and soon everyone was staring at me, even the teacher.

"Shut up." I muttered as I looked down and blushed.

"Attention class." The teacher, thankfully, called and everyone stopped staring at me as if I had grown another head.

"Is this the way to greet the guy who cared for you?" He smirked and I would have made a smartass remark but I knew he was right.

"Hey." I mumbled as I continued my doodling.

"Does that look like a C and a Q to me?" He asked with an amused expression. I looked at my drawing and I hadn't realized that I had, subconsciously, written a huge C, co-joined by a Q.

"I did not mean to." I looked down.

"Looks like C and Q are always together, huh?" He smirked wider and I blushed harder. But he didn't know when to stop.

"Like us, Castle and Quartza. Quite interesting and similar." Then an evil grin crossed his face, "This that why you wrote it? You and I?" He guessed and I couldn't help blushing.

"Of course I didn't! I wasn't paying attention to my drawing!"

"So I'm there in your subconscious too?" I wanted to slap that smirk away from his face.

"Quit that!" I ordered.

"Truth is always bitter sweet my love." He whispered in my ear and I did not reply. I knew this would annoy him.

Throughout the class, he kept on disturbing me several times but I tried not to pay attention. Teacher had announced that the 'declamation' would be cancelled, as the principle did not want any more plays. Shouldn't she ask the principle first? I mean, Castle and I were meet later today for the practice after school and now we'll need to cancel it.

Whoa! The reason why you are upset is that you would have to cancel your planned hangout? Girl, you are so damn changing.

"Looks like we don't need practice anymore right?" He smirked but now I was more controlled and my earlier mood overshadowed my blush. I just shrugged in response. Some silence around me and I drifted into that sad trance again. I hated this day! Yet it comes every year. I sighed with frustration.

"Emily!" Hunter called out to me during Gym. As usual, I ignored him. It has been days since I have talked to Hunter and yeah, I miss him, I miss him a lot but sometimes mistakes are greater than the feelings you feel for them.

"Emily, c'mon! Talk to me once, alright?" He caught up with me as I left the Gym.

"Hunter leave me alone." I said firmly.

"Emily." He pleaded and I could feel my resolution weakening. He quickly pulled me into the janitor's closet.

"Hunter what is it? I mean, you hurt me dude. You hurt me the most!"

After my parents.

"I'm sorry Emily. Trust me." He cupped my face but I stepped back.

"Hunter, you just don't go around kissing friends! Not your best friend!"

"Emily, I'm sorry but I have already told you that. How many times more do I need to apologize?" He looked hurt and broken. I stood there speechless, looking at his face.

"Emily." He said softly as he cupped my face.

"You are my best friend Emily. I do not want to lose you just because of me stupid mistake!"

"So you admit it was a mistake?" I raised my eyebrow.

"Yes, I do. Trust me Emily. These days have been the worst in my life. I have never lost anyone so close other than my Mom. I want you back Emily." I saw tears glistening in his eyes. I licked my lower lip and bit it.

"Emily, please! I am sorry, seriously sorry." He begged me.

"Me too." I looked away.

"Emily, don't you miss me at all?" He asked.

"I do Hunter. I do, all right. However, sometimes it just isn't enough! Feelings never last forever!"

"But friendships do." He whispered softly.

"You want friendship?"

"Yes. I want my best friend back." I looked into his eyes to see if he was telling the truth. He was.

"Emily, will you be my best friend again?" I nodded as I looked down and he pulled me into a tight hug. I hugged him back tightly. I felt better. Probably this day wouldn't be so bad. I have my best friend back.
