The sound of howling fills (Y/N)'s ears as the company takes cover beneath a large rock that's jutting out of the earth.

"Come and get me!" she hears Radagast shout with a near maniacal laugh as he and his rabbit-pulled sleigh launch out of the trees, luring the Orc pack out into the boulder-filled plains.

Gandalf peeks around the rock before beckoning the group closer.

"Come on," he says. The company forms a single-file line behind him, and (Y/N) chooses a position right in the middle. As they take off into the field, (Y/N) does her best to keep her rank, but ends up near the head of the group before very long.

Soon she sees Radagast and his sleigh cross the path they're heading for, and not long after that the Warg-riders as well. (Y/N) skids to a halt, a bit of dust being kicked up as she does so; she'd lost track of how far ahead she'd been and how fast she was running. As she turns back toward the way they'd came, she notices that most of the others are panting while trying to keep pace with her.

I need to pay more attention, she thinks in frustration. If I'm not careful I'll run right into the orc pack, which would alert them to where my 'target' is. Which would not be good. If I'm not the one to... go through with the job, then the Pale Orc will never release her!

"Stay together!" Gandalf reminds everyone as the group veers back to the opposite direction. This time she focuses much harder at being in the middle of the now very untidy line.

"Move!" Thorin shouts at those lagging near the back. They've only doubled back a short distance before (Y/N) hears the pound of paws thudding on grass grow closer. Ori, however, does not seem to hear this, and nearly runs out into the line of sight of the Orcs.

"Ori, no!" Oakenshield shouts, pulling him behind a rock. "Come back."

They all stay in the boulder cover for a moment, enjoying the mere seconds of partial safety.

"All of you, come on, come on! Quick!" Gandalf shouts, and the others run in the direction he indicates, (Y/N) included.

"Where are you leading us?" she hears Thorin asking the wizard as she passes by; however, she hears no response, but their footsteps added to the line a few Dwarves behind her.

The group continues on it the direction Gandalf leads them for what feels like only moments, before a Warg and his rider become aware of something amiss. Everyone backs up to a rocky ledge, the Warg standing atop it, and waits. It sniffs the air a few times, catching a scent.

It knows, she thinks nervously, unsheathing her sword. Her head whips around to look at the others, and she sees Oakenshield nod to Kili. The young Dwarf seems to get a message from this, and nocks an arrow to his bow. (Y/N) shakes her head vigorously.

Doing that would literally alert EVERY Orc and Warg within a mile. She's about to reach over to catch someone's attention and warn them about this, but but before she can move her hand more than a centimeter Kili turns around and backs up, aiming his bow at the Orc and his steed.

A moment later the first arrow is embedded in the Warg's shoulder. Another half a second and a second arrow has left his bow. The Warg lets out a shrill shriek, and (Y/N) visibly cringes at the amount of noise being produced, knowing that the Orc pack'll have heard that.

In spite of this, noticing that the Orc has landed extremely close to her, a smirk places itself on her lips. Before anyone else hardly has a chance to move, her elvish dagger pierces it's skull. Then the others rush over to the Warg and make short work of it.

(Y/N) slowly pulls her blade out of the orc's lifeless form and wipes it off on a corner of her already disgusting tunic. As she does so, she feels eyes on her once again. She turns around, one eyebrow raised slightly, and meets eyes with Thorin once again. His gaze is questioning, and she realizes that she probably could've hidden her combat experience a little better than she just had.

But thankfully for (Y/N) he isn't given much time to ponder on the topic, as the Warg howling is so loud that it almost hurts. Nearly everyone's face is glazed with fear.

"Move," Gandalf says. "Run!"

Everyone picks up their weapons and sprints after him through the golden meadows. (Y/N) no longer even thinks about the whole 'stay in pace with the rest of the group' thing, being far too filled with fear. The image of torchlight and searing hot pain filling her mind.

I can't get caught by them, she thinks frantically. Not again! Never again!

Though she doesn't spare a single thought on letting the others keep up, out of pure instinct she's trying to hide the fear on her face.

Suddenly, as she's running, she sees the orc pack dash across her field of vision, cutting the group off. She skids to a halt, one of the Dwarves who'd been near the front of the group almost running into her.

"There they are!" Gloin shouts, pointing out the general location, as if no one else would be able to figure that out.

"This way! Quickly!" Gandalf yells, leading the company in the general direction they'd come from.

Backtracking won't help, (Y/N) thinks nervously. It'll just delay the inevitable.

But still, knowing that it's just about their only chance to avoid capture at this point, she follows the group.

Gandalf leads them into a wide open dip in the land, and suddenly they're surrounded.

"There's more coming!" Kili shouts to Thorin as he runs toward where the group is now clustered, having been at the 'back of the pack' so to speak.

"Kili! Shoot them!" Oakenshield shouts as the demonesque wolves draw ever closer, closing in on them.

"We're surrounded!" Fili shouts.

(Y/N) sees Kili shoot an orc with his bow, but it's about as helpful as throwing a rock at a swarm of hornets.

"Where's Gandalf?!" Fili asks, looking around.

"He's abandoned us!" Dwalin shouts.

(Y/N) frowns. That hadn't seemed like the Wizard's style, but he isn't exactly anywhere to be seen, so that seems to be the most likely scenario.

"Hold your ground," Thorin says. The orcs are nearly upon them.

Now or never, I guess, (Y/N) thinks. She takes a small step forward, about to shape-change, when she hears something and turns around.

"This way, you fools!" Gandalf shouts from a hole in a large rock a few meters behind them. (Y/N) breathes a sigh of relief, and runs toward the hole along with the others.

"Come on, move! Quickly! All of you!" Thorin shouts. Before long everyone is in the hole. (Y/N) allows herself a moment to relax, and lets her gaze wander down the tunnel. Wait, why would there be a tunnel in the middle of nowhere? (Y/N) thinks, puzzled.

After only a moment her question is more-or-less answered, as a horn sounds and they can hear arrows being fired. Suddenly the corpse of an orc tumbles down into the tunnel beside them, arrow stuck in it's neck. Thorin reaches down and rips the arrow out, examining it.

"Elves," he says in disgust.
