The assassin awakes to being kicked very hard in the side. She'd slept in a clump of blueberry bushes about twenty feet behind Bag End, and hadn't really expected to be found. She leaps up with a start, whipping out her daggers and holding them to the neck of the one who'd awoken her.
It's an Orc. She lowers her knives down from it's throat and it begins to speak.
"Have you succeeded in your mission?" it asks, smirking in an extremely annoying way. The assassin shakes her head, a downcast look on her face.
"The Dwarf was alerted before I could make the kill," she says softly. The Orc makes an obnoxious tutting sound.
"You only had one simple job; find the Dwarf and bring his head to the Pale Orc. And you failed. You may as well say goodbye to that sister of yours now," the Orc says with a sneer. The assassin's face displays shock and horror.
"Please! Tell him to give me a little more time! I know I can do it, just give me a few more days!" the assassin pleads. The Orc looks satisfied with her state of near panic.
"We'll see what he says. But in the meantime, continue to track the Dwarves, and if you see the opportunity then strike," the Orc says. The assassin heaves a sigh of relief.
There's still a chance.
"Thank you," she says. The Orc ignores her and turns around to go and report back to the Pale Orc.
Once the Orc has left her line of sight, the assassin hears voices coming from over the hill behind her. Back at Bag End.
She dashes over towards the source of the sounds, being sure to stay completely silent. Once she is at the top of the hill, she looks down. The Dwarves are departing.
What perfect timing, the assassin thinks, a slight smile forming on her lips.
She kneels down on her knee and scans through the swathe of Dwarves. She immediately singles out her target and the wizard, but notices that the Hobbit isn't with them.
He must've decided not to come, she thinks in a slightly pitying way, I hope I didn't scare him too much.
The assassin watches as the group climbs onto their messy-maned steeds. Her gaze trails them as they ride away from Bag End and down the twisted trails of the Shire.
Once they are nearly out of her line of sight she jumps down from the hill, and her elegantly pointed black boots hit the worn stone stairs of Bag End.
For about 3 miles she trails the Company, but from a distance. The sun has risen far above the horizon by now. The longer she walks, the more careless the assassin gets, coming closer and closer to the group.
At this point the only thing concealing her is a bush or tree here or there. The horses are starting to get nervous, and Gandalf looks in her direction every so often, but the assassin always manages to conceal herself in time.
Once a pretty long while has been going on like this, Gandalf halts the group.
"Stop! Stop," he shouts. Her target turns his horse around and faces the wizard.
"What's the problem?" Oakenshield asks, looking mildly irritated.
"We're being followed," the wizard responds. The assassin freezes, realizing that she's been discovered. The Dwarf gives Gandalf a slightly skeptical look.
"By who?" Oakenshield asks, looking back to the trail behind them. This time the assassin just barely conceals herself to avoid being seen.
"It's hard to say. Be on your guard," the wizards says.
