Chapter 21: The Worst Kind of Pain
*Merielle's POV*
Luckily, none of the girls were awake yet when I slipped back in. I hurriedly showered and covered up the hickeys and bruises that Draco had left. He had been gentle with me. Then I slipped under the covers and attempted to fall asleep, but to no avail. My mind was swimming with thoughts. Therefore, I was the first to 'wake' and prepare for the day.
I summoned up the courage to tell them a few days later. We were sitting on the lawn outside. The first patches of bright blue were beginning to appear in the sky. Summer was approaching.
"There's something I need to tell the three of you," I began uneasily, making them turn to me.
"Finally," huffed Ron, making me frown and my heart rate quickened dramatically.
"Whatever do you mean?" I squeaked. Surely they couldn't know?
"Ella, we know that you've developed feelings for Malfoy," sighed Hermione, making me drop the book I was holding. It fell to the ground, but I didn't care.
"What?" I said weakly. Harry rolled his eyes.
"It's pretty obvious, Ella. The way you talk to him, the way you act...we've noticed a few days ago. You've grown closer." I sighed in defeat.
"Fine, fine. I have to give you credit though -I didn't think you'd notice."
"We're your best friends, Ella, of course we'd notice," Hermione smiled.
"Y -you're not...mad with me or anything?" I asked in a small, disbelieving voice.
"A bit pissed off, yeah," Ron admitted. Well, he was not going to like the next part.
"Actually, there's more to the story. We -Draco and I- we're sort of like, together." Hermione actually dropped her book, Ron stared at me with horrified eyes, and Harry was frozen where he was.
"Uh, are you...alright?" I asked them lamely.
"You're what?" thundered Ron. Yeah, I knew it'd turn out like this.
"We've agreed to give it a go, but we don't know if it'll exactly work out," I explained.
"He's nothing but bad news, Merielle. You deserve better," Hermione said.
"We're just giving it a go. We've agreed not to let it get too far, in case we want to back out." The three of them were silent.
"How do you know Malfoy's not using you? It is fraternising with the enemy, after all," Ron blurted out.
"Ronald Weasley!" I gasped, affronted, "He most certainly isn't! I -I trust him."
"That's real big, Ella, considering what you've been through," sighed Harry.
"I know, but we're both willing to take the risk. I'm not going to hurt him."
"It's not him getting hurt we're worried about," said Hermione patiently, "It's you."
"I appreciate your concern, I really do, but I can look out for myself. Now please, let's just move forwards. I don't need you agree with my decision-"
"-We don't," butted in Ron.
"-But I do need you to accept it and trust my choice," I finished, as if there had been no interruption.
"Fine," sighed Harry again, "but I swear to Merlin, I won't hesitate to hex him if he hurts you."
"Yeah, you can't trust him, Ella," agreed Hermione.
