Chapter 5: First Rejection
*Merielle's POV*
It was Potions. Harry told me that when Snape was Potions master, nobody had enjoyed it (apart from the Slytherins of course) but Professor Slughorn was a much better teacher. We were brewing the Flame Draught, which burnt everything it came in contact with and could ignite when mixed with lots of oil. But the actual preparation included a small quantity of oil. It was quite a hard one.
"Now, you can find the instructions on pages 132-134 in your books. Please start." I went to get the ingredients and carried them over. Malfoy was busy brewing. Harry seemed to excel at Potions, making Malfoy want to beat him desperately, but of course I knew the truth. That Potions book of his. The property of the Half-Blood Prince. Who even was the Half-Blood Prince? I shook my head and started chopping up some stalks.
Half an hour later, my potion was almost ready. I glanced at Malfoy. He was watching Harry, who was busy stirring, and didn't pay attention to the amount of oil he was tipping in.
"Malfoy!" I shrieked, lunging for him. I knocked the oil out of his hands, but not before most of it had tipped into his cauldron. His eyes widened as he saw that what he had done. We both stared in horror as there was a spitting, hissing sound. The potion bubbled and then there was an almighty bang! I ducked as the contents exploded and a burst of fire billowed out. A table crashed and fell onto me. I tried to push it aside, but to no avail. I was stuck. The whole class was in chaos. I saw a flame streak towards me and screamed.
"Aguamenti!" Yelled a voice and a jet of water extinguished it. I looked up to see Malfoy standing over me. He shoved aside the table and I winced.
"Your arm," he nodded towards a gash in my arm that was caused by the table. Blood was seeping out. He knelt down beside me and placed his wand tip over the wound, murmuring spells. His other hand took my arm and a shiver went up my spine. What was going on? It must just be my hormones. I didn't quite understand this version of Malfoy. He was always so arrogant and cold, but did he really...care? I studied him as he healed my arm. His touch was soft and gentle, his sleek, white-blond hair falling over his eyes. His eyes ranged from a molten silver to a pale, icy blue. Right now they were a clear, greyish blue. He let go of me.
"I hope that's better. Sorry about what happened. It was my fault. I should've been paying attention. And thank you, for warning me." He stood up, but I grabbed his arm, and felt a tingle up mine.
*Draco's POV*
She grabbed my arm and it felt like an electric touch. Her touch was warm and gentle, and her fingers were loosely curled. She had painted her nails a glossy red. I turned around and found myself staring into those wide, soft eyes. They were dark and rich like chocolate, with a touch of gold in them sometimes. Her waves of dark hair tumbled down before her into perfect ringlets. She looked at me from under her long, thick lashes.
"Thank you," she whispered. I nodded, my throat too tight to speak. She released me and I stumbled away. No, no, no.... I was not falling for this girl. I am Draco Malfoy, and girls fall for me, not the other way round. But she wasn't like the other girls. She was special. And I didn't know what had come over me. I had helped her.
"Mr Malfoy," Professor Slughorn addressed me, "That was most reckless behaviour. Twenty points from Slytherin and I shall let your Head of House know about this."
"Yes, sir." The rest of the lesson was tidying up the mess. Seeing as most people hadn't finished the draught, and some needed to start all over again (like me) this was extended for next lesson. The professor dismissed us for break and my friends and I headed out to our usual place under our tree.
We were laughing at a joke Blaise was making when I saw Stargline walk past, her hair rippling in the sunlight. She was with Potter, Granger and Weasley. Ugh, what did she see in them anyways?
"Hey, Stargline," I called. She turned around and saw me.
"Yes?" She asked as she and her friends came towards us. I panicked for a second. What was I doing? I hardly knew.
"Look, Stargline, you're pretty hot. And I think you do like me. So, do you want to, uh, go out with me?" What was I thinking? Everyone was stunned into silence.
"Excuse me?" she demanded.
"Will you go out with me?" I repeated. It was too late to back out now.
"Are you being serious, Drakie?" laughed Pansy. I wanted to slap her.
"Malfoy, give me a moment." Stargline comprehended my words.
"Alright, I have a poem for you."
"Ooh, she's giving you a love poem, Draco," laughed Blaise. My heart did a strange little leap.
"Roses are red, violets are blue... " she began. I felt myself blush. Did she really like me? Her friends were staring in disbelief. Stargline continued to say,
"Faces like yours belong in a zoo. And don't worry, I'll be there too. Not in a cage, but laughing at you." There was a silence as everyone realised what she was saying. Then they all burst into laughter.
"Why would I ever go out with you, Malfoy? You're nothing but a conceited, cold, horrid git who makes other people miserable because you can't find happiness in your own damn heart. You're not nice to anyone. Stay away from me." Her tone was cool. She walked away, and her friends smirked at me before leaving. I just stood there, unable to believe my ears.
"Ooh, Draco just got rejected! That's a first," mocked Blaise. I turn to him.
"Alright, how about this? If I can win her over and make her become my girlfriend by the end of the year, I win the bet."
"Hah! Sure, fifty galleons. But you won't win, Draco. I've never seen a more feisty and stubborn badass."
"Yeah," added Pansy, "She will never love you, Drakie. Unlike me. This whole thing is ridiculous." Her fruitless attempts at flirting with me were disgusting.
"Oh, it may be hard, but that's what makes it fun. It will be a great challenge, with her as the prize. And I'm up for it. She will be difficult to pursue, but that's what makes me more determined. I'll make her fall hard for me, and then I'll drop her." I smiled. The challenge was on.
I noticed how she tried to avoid me the entire day. In Charms in the afternoon, I sent her a note. She glanced down and read it, frowning.
Meet me at the top of the Astronomy Tower tonight at nine. -D.M.
I saw her roll her eyes as she wrote a quick reply and sent it back.
Fine.
I grinned. It was a start. I watched her throughout Charms. She was skilled, I have to admit. A quick learner. I didn't want to admit it, but she was even better than me.
